Hunt Talker 2023 Fitness Goals

I had my cast removed and started doing some bench press and pullups this past week. Still have to take if fairly easy with another 2.5 weeks of no weight bearing before I start PT. Amazing how fast muscle atrophies, right leg is looking like a chicken leg.

Incision pic before stiches were removed. Hid the big pic in case someone doesn't want to see, but I suppose you can still see the thumbnail.

Being a hopelessly addicted western hunter that lives in the flatlands of Florida I will be spending lots of time (2-3 hours/week) running/power walking on a treadmill as inclined as it gets with a 45lb weight vest. We call it the treadmill mountain workout, it’s a mind numbing brutal hour!
We who live in western states drive as far in as we can or horses. You nonresidents are some real athletes!

and i keep seeing articles about how denver is like a top 10 city people are looking to leave.

boulder, golden, and fort collins are some pretty incredible places to live on the front range though. as much i, and everyone, like to shit on boulder, and for good reasons, it's probably about the best spot you can live in that's not a mountain town purely from an access to activities standpoint.
facts. Boulder has some of the best Vert / Mile ratios out there. I did the Leadville 100k vert challenge in 2020 when they couldn't have the race, and I spent 60% of my days out there running / hiking to get as much gain per mile as I could

So, I went into Alb.(Hot) and met my new oncologist today. He's got a good nurse. I aced the BP and such. Steady around 173lbs.
Nice guy, no nonsense, questions and nods asks questions and good, good, very good.
Full hands on exam.
He will crack some whips to straighten out the one med situation.
I meet again by video in 3 months. Blood work monthly. Same same.
419.16 PSA 11 months ago is now .32.....4.0 and below is good.

So I made it another day and yuz clowns are stuck with me for the duration.

2 weeks out from first hunt. Under my predicted bodyweight [goal weight incentivizes the wrong thing] and strength / conditioning are there. Two weeks to blow it now! Ended up down 20 pounds of bodyweight from December.

Side note, having your two hobbies be polar opposite is fun. Powerlifting and backpack hunting couldn’t be farther apart. I gain and lose about 20 pounds a year, depending on my goals, work/life, and hunt schedule. Somehow strength still edges up higher every year than the previous but I know it’s not sustainable forever. At some point I’ll be forced to admit that the years-to-the-grave are fewer than the years-since-birth.

That’s very interesting. I’m the opposite and my hobbies are similar in terms of weigh and strength requirements.

I hunt, fish, do multi-sports and running. My weight moves 5 pounds max during the year. Can get boring but the cross training is easy!

I ran another 5k this morning. I finally broke 25 minutes with a time of 24:11. It was a tough race, mostly because I've been gone all week on a camp with youth from our church, so I did almost no exercise this week. I can't believe how bad taking a week off makes you feel. I picked a guy in the community that I know is an avid runner and paced myself with him. It payed off and I finally achieved my goal of getting sub 25. Now its time to move the goal to 24. 20230722_081304.jpg

I’ve trained only cardio and mix cardio/weight lifting. Cardio only kicked my ass. I feel my best when I’m strong too. Weight lifting with cardio. My cardio has changed from running to hiking/bike riding due to back surgeries.

My fitness goal every is to remain in elk hunting shape, whatever that means. I’m still there!

I used to run a couple of ultras every year. When I first started, my training was to run. Over time, I incorporated more weights into my routine. The last race I did was a 50 miler. I lifted heavy 2-3 days per week, ran 3-4 days per week, and mountain biked 2-3 days per week. Never felt better in the mountains than I did that year.
