Hunt Talk ideas for the off-season?

Jesse called me this morning and asked me. We decided the topic would be, "The absurdity of outdoor TV" or "Clowns in a camouflaged circus" or something similar that would make fun of outdoor TV.

That should be an easy topic for a clown like me. I will be right at home.

Don't. Worry fin your ratings will go up this year with my absence:eek:. It only took you three years to realize what the anchor was.

How about shooting?

Maybe once a month...shoot a 3 shot string with a HUNTING rifle at 100 yards, post the particulars of your set up and a picture of the target.

Also, maybe one shot a month at a target at 200, 300, and 400 through the summer. Would be interesting to see those at the end of it.

Gives everyone an excuse to do more shooting...which is never a bad thing.

Off season? Don't know about you guys, but small game (squirrel and rabbit) are open till the end of February. Squirrel hunting is by far my favorite hunting (yes, weird, I know). Then it's only a month or two till spring turkey. Coyotes are open year round here. Off season? What off season?

We have the Moosie Challenge to keep us busy

Yes "I" do ;) I'll be busy with Working out and pictures for daily posts. In Addition, I have several other things going on. With 5 kids, I never have free time......

I do like the "FIND THIS" in the picture though. It's an old kid game but for adults now :D

no, not weird, those little tree rats are darn good eating and are made for kids to learn hunting on!

A web site I used to frequent had a thread for bird pictures, and it was very popular.

I started a thread once titled "Write this Novel". I wrote a couple of introductory paragraphs and turned it over to whoever wanted to contribute and it was an incredible success...the three main characters wound up in an Ensenada bar, involved in abducting the bad guy, and.....well, you just gotta read it. Been thinking of doing that again here.

...good idea.

I like this idea too, and was mulling over what the best format for an informal, big game hunting oriented shoot would be.

I was thinking 10 shots total. Allows for some variety but doesn't use too much ammo or provide too much shooting for those with big or expensive guns to shoot. Shooting at various ranges is a much better test of preparation, but shooting all at 100 makes it simple for the most # of folks to participate, at least to start.

Weight a single, cold first shot most heavily, as it matters most in a hunting situation, any non-bench position.

Weight all the rest the same.

3 shots, scored individually, any non-bench position, maybe with a time constraint.

3 shots, scored individually, sitting position.

3 shots, scored individually, offhand.

Make it a total out of 100, with targets small enough to be hard to clean, and big enough you don't need to be a great shooter already to get on the board. Maybe mix it up each month too, to keep things interesting.

Thoughts? If I made up some targets would anyone be in?

I would be in, but considering how bad I shake with my tremors, you might need a really big target for me to just be "on paper" in the offhand position.

Does a non-bench position allow me to use my bipod? I am almost as good on a bipod as I am on a bench. Guess that tells how bad I am on a bench.

To me, winter and spring used to mean steelhead fishing. That's time well spent.

Grew up 11 years in Salmon Idaho and never tried Steelhead fishing:( I guess I'm still not much better. I haven't even taken the kids through Yellowstone and I live not too far away.

For the offhand target, I was thinking of having three rings, a 4" would get you the max score of 8 (per shot), a 6" would get you a score of 5, and an 8" would score 3. Any bigger is tough to keep on standard 8.5x11 paper, which most people can print to. If the targets were square instead of round that would effectively increase the target size by a little bit.

Non-bench position would allow for a bipod, backpack, whatever you like, just not off of a bench. I'd probably shoot it prone with a Harris 9-13 and a homemade rear bag.

My vote is for an equipment swap, we all have extra stuff, let's trade it around. I tried to start a bullet swap but didn't have any bites, open it up to any and all equipment. Thoughts?????

Sounds good to me.

Just put three new sub-forums in the Classifieds section:

1) For Sale

2) Wanted To Buy

3) Trade or Swap

I got lots of stuff to trade or swap. Whoever wants to start that thread, do so under the Trade and Swap section and let's start moving this stuff to people who will use it more than the current owner.
