Hero's of the left

Cali- Can't speak for County or Rural (volunteer) firefighters but I believe the last death we had from a City firefighter in the 17+years I've been here was a heart attack while working out. In fact most all of the comp claims from that Dept. are for injuries related to "work out" activities.

...or maybe carpal tunnel...wax on - wax off.... ;)

The firefighter comments started out as firefighters in general. It is now centered on forest service or woodland firefighters, apparently. .

Cali,

And, if I remember right, the Cheese was trying to claim he was a heroic first responder like the guys in the WTC and 9-11... just becuase he was on a mop up crew on wild fires after the real crews had put them out and moved on.

I think a lot of the washing trucks is due to the schedule those guys work. Usually 2 or 3 24 hour shifts and then they go home. You can only watch so much TV before washing the truck, grocery shopping, or working out are done just to maintain sanity.

-you forgot ping pong, pool, and the must have of all properly staffed fire stations...the Wii ;)

The same opinion of wildland firefighters does not seem to apply to city/full-time firefighters, then? (Other than Marv... ;) ) Beyond washing trucks, there is a lot of routine maintenance on other equipment that goes on as well as ongoing training.

I have 2 sons-in-law that are paramedic-firefighters. Both graduated from UCLA-Daniel Freeman med center. It seems that emergency medical procedures are constantly changing as new techniques or equipment evolve. For example, the use of CPAP machines in heart attack situations, new drugs for strokes, etc.

Congrats to you Cali for keeping up on that stuff. Lots of you elderly need to be informed of the latest medical advances.

Cali- Don't think I feel that there isn't a need for urban firefighting response, heck two of by best friends are fireman and my b-i-law runs one of the larger EMT/abulance companies here in the Northstate so I have a pretty good "idea" of the training involved.

What I'm saying, and it is known to most, that with urban firefighting though the danger is just as real when you repsonding to an incident, there is A LOT of downtime. Probably why you see them (at least in this town) trying to repond to any 911 type of call that the amb. service could normally be covering- they are bored with the status quo a goodly bit of the time.

With wildland firefighting you at least know there is going to be a fire "season", albeit a good one or bad one is typically judged by OT hours ;) you don't have the luxury of knowing the time of year that houses are going to burn, chemicals are going to be spilled (ours are also hazmat 1st responders), or cars are going to crash within your city limits...therein lies the downtime sporting events we all know/hear about.

Again, my opinion of them? Ones I know are friends and great people doing noble work- they just are a little bored quite a bit of the time....and I think the linecrews I deal with on a daily basis have much more a dangerous job/profession if that helps clarify my answer.

You may get there one day, yourself - or you going to off yourself at a certain age to avoid what you seem to either fear or disparage? I believe you said something about when you are unable to do certain things, you would take yourself out.

I am not sure why you are so afraid of getting old or so bigoted against the elderly. Are your parents still alive? Do you abuse them?

Marv - no doubt. Nick and Dean would be the first to admit that they spend a lot of time figuring out what to do or what they are going to have for dinner.

They could always start shit on their good friend's hunttalk site. That seems to occupy a stagnant intellect easy enough.

Most of our firefighters in AZ, spend most of thier time patching up illegals and their families... gunfights, stabbings. rapes wrecks caused by Jose and his kind.hump:).. oh yea and reviving kids that are neglected by the parents.:(:BLEEP:...hot cars and swimming pools.....

Whats up OAK! you don't have a Bota? or a Sombrero? geez, get assimilated Dude!:D

Holy Cow!!!

I am honored, being gone for so many months and still at the fore front of so many minds...

I feel...
....
....
...Loved... :D

I came on the Iron complex at about the same time the nine people were dying

You could feel the darkness about the camp; many people said they felt the same thing...

As it goes on my stance on where Government (the peoples) money should be spent...

I've openly stated it before:

National security
Police
Fire
And a limited amount of others...

I guess, because I’m a part of that it, makes me a hypocrite, well, so be it I suppose...

As the fires are going any more, I’ve noticed, they have been letting them burn, matter of fact, there was a huge amount of that, including help with the drip torches to make them bigger (makes for some cool pics and vids)

We had the fire jump where we were working and every one had to evacuate the area, pretty neat, smoke racing up the mountain where we were at, then the sound of a huge locomotive filled every ones ears

The smoke soon started to glow and the embers were raining down around the last of us to leave the area...

When we came back in the next day, the whole area (except where we had set sprinklers around two houses) was blackened

Some would say this was dangerous, but it was well choreographed and every one made it out safe and sound with but a few fire fairy burns to show on my line bag for the closeness of it all...

The lawyers have made it so cost prohibitive to prescribe burn any more that the IC management teams just make their safety lines larger than normal to burn out huge chunks of land

I witnessed about 100 square miles of this over the summer so far (I suppose this could be construed as exaggeration, but one would have had to been there to witness the carnage...

I see it as a great thing, eliminates huge tracts of diseased vegetation and forests, getting things back to a more normal state for the eco system, while at the same time, protect buildings and people...

Is it expensive...

Well sure it is, any time one has to go over board to help Mother Earth it gets expensive...

Ask Buzz and his million mile march about the cost of beautifying America one marsh at a time... ;)

And I'm glad that shoe fits well on both feet here, yours and mine... ;)

No, actually there is a difference. 1Ptr does it because that is his love, his interest, and he spent the time to get educated to do it really well and attempt to make a difference (and as soon as he gives up on cattle providing benefit on MY PUBLIC LANDS, he will accomplish that.)ot

Cheese does it a few months of the year because he has failed at other ways to make some coin in life, and he knows how to run a shovel as well as anyone with a strong back.

Not even anywhere near the same set of shoes......
