Going try first time elk hunting. Had a friend that's headed back now. He hunted 9 days and only heard 1 elk the whole time. Said it was hot. I seen on the weather forecast that there's cooler Temps coming so hoping for the best.

The elk are starting to talk, people always complain that they didn’t bugle early in the season this year. That’s true, but it is also true they never bugle much early in the season in any year, especially in units that have pressure. They were talking around this waterhole on the Uncompahgre a couple nights ago.

Well first two days spent in are first unit of choices with no luck. Found older elk sign from this year but looks like they have moved on. Dropped down from 11,500 feet to 9,600 then had to make are way back up. This task was physically demanding. We in no way thought it was going to be that bad but it was, 7 hours to get back to the truck. We decided to change unit and are headed to salida now.

They were rutting hard in CO as of Saturday, with lone satellite bulls to be found nearby. Get up high and glass at first and last light, and make a plan from there once you locate them. Good luck!
