Freshwater fishing stamp?

It made me think of having a "fish tax".

There could one rate per pound, like pay $0.05/lb of fish, but also an additional rate per inch, like $0.05/inch. We need both, as some fish are short and fat and others are long and skinny.

If we only taxed weight and not length, somebody would try and catch all the low taxed fish, so have a tax for both length and weight. Its only fair catch then, pay for what you catch based on length and weight. Maybe there shoud be a stocking tax too, pay more of this tax if you even fish on a day closely following the stocking day, it doesn't matter if you catch them for this tax, it matters when you fish.

So, a length, weight, and day fishing tax. That might cover possible abuses. Maybe a trophy spot tax, like if you always fished the places where the trophy fish were, you should pay for that. That might cover most of the abuses.

Maybe there should be taxes, depending on the baits, rods, etc. Some of those take more fish than others. If somebody always used a barb hook, they would take more fish, its only fair they pay, right?

What do you think?

It might not pass now, did you see in the news that the Texas democrats in the legislature ran away to Oklahoma. What leaders??!! The govenor sent a plane for them to volunteer to come back. If they come back in the state, the state troopers can arrest them and bring them back to the legislative session. The republicans in the legislature are handing out most wanted cards with the democrats pictures on them.

I put the story on that in the friends area.

Tom thier is no way that a fish tax can be enforced... it would have to go on the honner system..

Hey, I got an idea, how about imposing a possession limit?

Forget the tax, forget the cost, just make it against the law to possess more than 2 days possession (including fish gifted to others).

Hand the dude a copy of the regs...and if he doesnt comply, fine his ass.

I wonder if he's ever heard of "catch and release".

I dont want to take the old farts fishing away, but for Christ sakes killing 1500 hatchery trout a year is ridiculous. I dont know enough fools that would take 1500 hatchery trout...he must live around Thompson Falls or N. Idaho to find that many idiots...

BUzz .. Thats the best Idea I have heard... Most states have possesion limits I am suprised Idaho dont...

Its very easy to get something like that changed with game and fish... all you have to do is attend one of their meetings and bring up the idea... it helps of have a bunch of fishermen backing you(like about 30 of them).....

The guy is not breaking the law, as he is allowed 6 fish per day, as the trout limit is: 6 per day, in the aggregate (page 7) as described in Bag and Possession Limit.

Furthermore, on page 9, Possession limit is described as "in the field or being transported to the final place of consumption or storage".

This is kind of interesting where you have somebody park their 5th wheel by a lake all summer, and somebody else who lives in a cabin next door, year round. The guy in the cabin can catch 6 fish, every day, and freeze them. The guy in the 5th wheel's fish are "in transit" to his winter home, so he can only catch 6, and freeze or eat them. It is a loophole that has been discussed in the past.

This guy is likely takin advantage of the situation, but if it keeps him from driving his 68 Chrysler down the freeway at 40 mph with the turn singal on, then I am probably ok with it.

Buzz and IT,

You guys need to be a little more consistant with your critism. The old guy likes to fish and maybe takes a little advantage of the system, big deal. Buzz brags about wacking 3 freezer's full of game last season and IT pats him on the back. Perfectly legal but.... Buzz teases him about eating hatchery fish, and that there needs to be a possesion limit, yet he still has salmon left over from last year. Year old salmon, yuck! Buzz, either you are not eating your salmon very fast, or you brought home a pile of fish. Either way, you ought to be careful who you point the finger.

Paul, Here's a similar situation in pheasant hunting:

F&G stocks pheasants on some state wildlife management lands and hunters have to buy a special permit ($21.50) that is good for 6 pheasants. Multiple permits may be purchased. It's a "pay as you go" system.

Ten and Paul, Please tell us (in all your wisdom) which system is more fair; the pheasant permit system or the old guy's fishing system?

For standard fish like bass walleye trout etc. the regular licence and system works... Dont forget there are alot of people that dont catch thier limit and only fish 2-6 times a year.

For salmon and steelhead we used to have to buy a punch card(like the pheasant one you mentioned) after we filled the org up....

Damn you guys are really getting down to the nitty gritty. how about putting a tag system on chucker, quail, coyotes , squirrels etc...? sounds pretty rediculious doesnt it.

Ithaca there are lots of ways to save game and fish money with out making people pay more for licence's...

Heck you could even raise the NON-RES fees a few bucks...

Well put Paul.

I think the case here seems to be, is that IT is jealous that this old guy has the time and means to fish every day.

There is a reason why those pounds a called "put-n-take" pounds. Most around here are set up through donationsso that the elderly and kids have a safe place to go recreate and fish. You think we oughta tax that now?
BUZZ, what do you do with three freezers full of game? How many salmon did you bring home again?

IT, why don't you just come out and call the guy a "welfare fisherman"? I know you and BUZZ are both thinking it.

IT, the big opposer of welfare ranching, welfare farming, welfare logging, and now "WELFARE FISHING"

I don't see a problem with this guy sitting there and taking a limit of HATCHERY fish each day.

Paul and Ten, I'm currently looking for a 4th freezer...know of any good deals?

I bet you guys have plenty of room in your freezers....

Oh, and I never kill salmon from Idaho...

Buzz,

If you like catching Salmon so much, why the hell don't you SMILE in the pictures???
biggrin.gif

It is supposed to be fun....
biggrin.gif

Big fish are a blast to catch, congrats...

Elkgunner, you are correct, it is fun, and yeah, I look like a grouchy bastard...my damn timer works kind of sporatically on my camera and I can only smile so much while waiting for the thing to work.

Plus, fishing those salmon wears me out more than hunting. The 2001 season damn near killed me. I fished 17 days, and woke up at 2-3 a.m. on all those days. Fished from daylight to dark on a majority. I wanted to make sure I maximized my days on the river...it could be 20 years before I get another chance at those great fish in Idaho. Surviving on 3-4 hours of sleep started to get to me...salmon fishing is a dangerous sport. But, on the positive side, I landed over 100 fish in 2001, including my best day of landing 14 kings.

What a blast!

I like the pay for what you catch idea. I don't like the possession limit idea. It seems un-American to go to somebodies house or something and count their fish. If a guy catches a bunch and pays for them, then that promotes more fishing. If the old guy gives them away, maybe some of those people will vote for fishing and hunting issues, even if they don't fish themselves. If the old guy is limited, and those people are limited, then fishing and hunting doesn't benefit as much. Nice fish Buzz. Try to smile, you old grouch. haha

IT, next I guess you'll want all those little kids that ride their bikes down to the ponds th have to buy a license. What should the age be, 5 years old, maybe 8?

I mean how many fish do those kids haul home? I'd bet most of them have more then their limit, and don't even know what a limit is.
