Foraged Food Thread

yep. They look like they might be over ripe though. If the pores on the bottom have opened up already, the edible meaty top part can be too rubbery by that point.

You were correct, the pores were open and i did the scrape test and they were too old.

20240513_125742.jpg20240513_125730.jpgmy first ever foraged mushroom. Small pheasants back. I was in Virginia last week at the new rental property and stumbled upon this little fella.

Pretty stellar huckleberry year here in Montana, huh? They’ve been a little screwy the past few years. Seems like I can’t kick a bush without a berry in it this year.

Finding a lot in NE Oregon as well. MT. Emily reportedly is loaded with huckleberry.

Not sure this goes on the forage thread but can't think of anywhere else to put it. My neighbor started bee keeping a little over a year ago and has a box in one of my fields. I get free honey and pollinators so a win win all around. Only downside I found is there's something in my hog feed that they love and swarm around. Got stung the other day slinging a feed sack over my shoulder apparently a bee was on the sack and didn't enjoy being crushed on my shoulder. The latest jar he gave me this morning I think he may need to work on his refinement some.20240826_081952.jpg

My Pappy had world-class eyes when it came to finding morels. He had severe cataracts and saw so poorly he lost his license. But the man could always spot mushrooms. Found this pic this spring helping my dad clean out a room. It was taken in 1995 and was one of our last good hauls before his health started to decline. I had it professionally scanned and touched up so it’s a very clean digital version. Ended up having it printed on a 16x20 piece of glass. Turned out awesome. IMG_0910.jpegIMG_8553.jpeg

Not knockin' your pappy in any way, but you don't need great vision to find 'em when they're that big! Great pic!
