I’m surprised it is still that crowded with only 105 total mule deer tags and elk tags being cut back. Didn’t think anyone went there to whitetail hunt. Not sure I’ve even seen a whitetail on the public land that I’ve hunted in that area. Unless a lot of people don’t know that it is a draw tag now?

I owned property in the western part of the 700 zone right on the Musselshell river that we purchased, 1980, many years ago. There were always lots of WT around and easy to take. Never drew an elk tag for the 410 zone but hunted with friends that drew. I was hunting WT for meat. We sold the property before it became an interstate roads corridor. I hunted the 410 zone on Block Management property. The land owners put up signs that stated no vehicular traffic beyond this point. TOO many ignored these signs creating hazards for hunting and rancher working. I did my scouting days prior to opening day. Knew where the travel corridors were. Sat on stand early, only to have Cabelas cowboys walk in with their collective heads planted firmly in their anal cavities. This happened two days in a row. The hunters, whether resident or nonresident, seems little to care. It became a safety issue when these were aimlessly walking around in open fields with no respect. Guess it must be me. But, I will not encroach upon another who is set up early to hunt an area. My rant. MTG

Pretty crazy is an understatement it’s a flat out show and the desperation with the western Montanans and non residents to fill tags due to the resource being depleted was asinine! My buddy owns a bunch of property and he turned so many people in this year for doing illegal stuff because they couldn’t find deer on public land! He flew one day and some dumb asses from Washington were camped on his property after they drove through the no trespassing signs. A big change is needed for sure and hopefully it happens

@Treeshark and whoever else. Attached is the economic output of one land management agency (BLM). Note, in "Direct Economic Output" the amount (this is directly tied to BLM activities, oil/gas leases, timber sales, etc etc) BLM Budget is around $2 Billion I believe. I'm not understanding exactly why NR think they are subsidizing public land and access, that shit pays for itself.

Interesting. So that means that states should have no problem funding/managing state land should the feds transfer it to them, correct?

I was under the impression that would be an impossible lift for them to pay for fire control, wildlife management etc…

The problem with state transfer is a large amount of states are just going to surplus that land and sell it. There is a reason people (rich people) want state transfer, so they can get really expensive, resource rich land for cheap. It is infinitely easier to sell state land that federal land.

Not to mention that the land was never the "states" in the first place, as the federal govt purchased the land via the Louisiana Purchase before any of those states were, you know, states.

Added edit: Ultimately, given what states have previously done with their state land allocations, a majority of it would be sold. Also, imagine if WY had all federal land within it's borders transferred to state lands. You can't camp on state lands in WY. How does that improve hunting for NR? Similar laws apply in other states, including CO, where access is determined by the lessee.

This issue has been debated, explained, and settled on HUNT TALK so many times. Perhaps we should appoint BUZZ or another knowledgeable HTer to monitor and whenever someone seems to be in support of PLT, then just take them to the "woodshed" and move on from this sordid topic.

Hey, when I am recreating, I don't like bullets flying by and besides, I want my federal land that is unhuntable to me, to be making my life better, producing oil, Lithium, cheap beef and lumber, etc. etc. If I'm not hunting it I want it making "stuff" for me.
