ELK POACHED

Gunner i`ll raise ya a nickel, yes it`s true that silencers and night vision are illegal, but why would that or anything else matter to a poacher? close a road to atv`s and will that stop poaching? if someone [poacher] is willing to break all of the laws to commit their crime i don`t see where banning roads/atv`s is going to stop the criminal/lazy/ poacher.

cj- I agree I don't think closing roads or banning ATV will deter people like the Ruth's or those involved in the large poaching rings one hears about now and then. However, I do believe it would curtail those who kill animals because of circumstances. Like a deer right next to a road/trail, where it would take less 5min for the whole deed to be done. I can prove it, but I hazard a guess that this accounts for the majority of animals poached.

I can prove it, but I hazard a guess that this accounts for the majority of animals poached.
Then prove it.

I would hazard a guess that more poached animals remains are discovered near roads by the shear volume of people that pass the site, and someone with enough nerve reports it. Hazard a guess about this: How many animals do you think are poached in the "backcountry" but never discovered? You are right about one thing though, it has everything to do with access and mobility, discovering poached animals that is.
And Rivers are HUGE barriers to poaching, as most poachers will not work hard enough to cross a river to break the law. As Buzz pointed out, most poachers are lazy, that is why they use the ATVs.
Rivers are great barriers, a poached animal may never be found on the other side or down stream. BUZZ, you found the foundation for that ATV claim yet? Do any of you know the difference between winter kill and winter killed????

I thought it might have been, but after the beating I got for a typo on another topic, I would surmise that even an "edumacated" person can make errors. We third graders sit in the middle of the bus, welcome aboard.
:D

You didn't have anymore guesses to hazard, did you? Or is it you feel my guesses don't warrant any response?

Of course with more access/mobility more poached animals will be discovered. But, I'd also guess that the rate of occurrence is higher as well. There's no doubt that animals are poached in the backcountry. In my experience though, the people willing to work hard enough to get into the backcountry are more likely to abide by the rules.

It has been my personal experience in Idaho that those persons whom work hardest to get into the "back country" are least likely to follow the rules, and most likely to take extra animals, or "throw away / cull" one animal if a bigger one presents itself later.

I could just imagine somebody on a pack string, riding in 20 miles to shoot a couple of does to fill the freezer....

Or somebody on a backpack hunt, that wants to hike 10 miles with a couple of extra cow elk on their backs....

Ten, just when I think you can't be any dumber, you once again, prove me wrong...

You were the one that found all the articles on poaching and the correlation to roads/motors....

1_ptr,
I am guessing many of your experiences were different than 10 Beers.... Certainly all of the ones in school, beyond 3rd grade.....

I wonder if he actually believes the stuff he posts? It would be interesting to know. My guess is he is not nearly as dumb as he sounds in his posts. But I have been wrong before...

EG, "My guess is he is not nearly as dumb as he sounds in his posts. But I have been wrong before..." I wonder about that, too. I fluctuate between thinking nobody could actually be that stupid and thinking he really is that stupid. I don't spend much time worrying about it though. He does get some kicks out of getting some of us to post lengthy replies to his assinine remarks, but at least some other people might learn something new from them once in awhile. I often do. His most usefull function is serving as a constant reminder that there truly are idiots running around in the woods with loaded guns. :D
