Rock Springs, Wyoming Poaching Incident

One thing I would add to this thread, is I personally obey all hunting and fishing regulations explicitly and expect anyone who is with me to do the same. I have asked a few people to leave the property I had hunting permissions that were in my group for pursuing game with a vehicle or for trespassing. As for poaching, I report all violations of the law, but I still remain sympathetic to someone who is doing it because they need the meat. As I said before, that is less than 5% of animals that are poached. One thing I will never do is lie to law enforcement. If I know anything and I get asked, I will tell the truth 100%.

I did some more research. Here is response from the chief game warden here in Cheyenne:

In Wyoming, road killed animals cannot be donated for human consumption, so a game warden is not able to issue interstate game tags for road kills. Wyoming Statute 35-7-1302 states that donation of game animals shall not come from any road kill animal and any road kill animal shall not be eligible for donation. Please see the link below for explanation of retrieving antlers or horns attached to the skull or skull plate.

What this means, is you can not recover roadkill for human consumption. There are however, options to recover roadkills in Wyoming for other than human consumption.

WyoDoug:

I had done my research prior to commenting on your post of April 14 (6:42 PM) regarding the donation of edible portions of road killed animals for human consumption in Wyoming.

Now it appears you have done additional research and have found that what I posted was, in fact, correct.

I will admit the information in this Frequently Asked Question regarding the picking up of road killed animals can be somewhat confusing:

The information is this Ask Game and Fish is more informative:

I hope this clears up any confusion regarding what can and can't be removed from road killed animals in Wyoming and what procedure has to be followed to legally do so.

True. I also received incorrect information from a G&F employee indicating that a game warden could give you a tag for the meat. Apparently, this G&F employee is not in the know. Someone that was making pet food or treats though, I bet they could make a deal with G&F to pick up road kill.
