I'm not a collector, I like practical rifles that can be hunted hard. However, I do have one rifle that was a bit of a "dream." I wanted a Kimber 84M in 257 Rob in a good stick of walnut. Most of the Kimber wood is pretty disappointing, but after quite a few years looking I found one I loved and bought it.

Those of us a certain age grew up reading O'Connor and dreaming about M70's. At my heart, I'm a CRF guy and think that's what a "real" rifle is built around. It's my irrational prejudice, but at least I'm aware it's not rational and IS a prejudice.

There was a brief time when they held my curiosity but didn't take the plunge...fully recovered.

I’m 43, I have a slick little Cooper in 7mag that shoots absolutely lights out…..I still find myself grabbing my pre 64 .270 more often than not. It’s all about the feel of the walnut, the ease and smoothness of the action that gets me. I know I can shoot tighter groups with the Cooper all day long, but holding and handling those old winchesters just does something different for me.

Winchester was CRF until some time then push feed. Then back to CRF and back again push feed, right? Were all pre-64 CRF? And Vietnam snipers had push feed. Do the 90’s CRF hold any value over the 80’s push? @mtmuley is right, this pre-64 is dumb.

I am not of that age, but my old man was - I’m pretty sure there’s a copy of everything O’Connor ever wrote on his bookshelf. That’s slowly becoming my bookshelf now. That’s why I want one.

Here you go. Some fancy shop around Kalispell has (or had about a year ago, anyway) actual O'Connor-owned rifles plus tons of other high-end stuff; someone from that area will likely know the name as I don't recall it.

Not that I’d turn an actual O’Connor down if it was given to me, but I really want a pre ‘64 M70 270 Win and have @p_ham do it up right. Just something about being able to say I had a Paul Hampton before he became “Paul HAMPTON” that appeals to me.
