Coyote killing contest

It could be 50% of the ranchers are responsible grazers but 70% of the land is controlled by the 50% who are not.

Good point, Nemont. I've been waiting years for someone to point that out. The corporate ranches are probably the worst. Check out how much public grazing land Simplot Corp. and Packard (from Hewlet-Packard) have. I was hunting a new area (to me) today on some public land that actually was in pretty good shape. I'd say about half the grazed land I walked across in a four hour hike was in good condition. I was so surprised I almost stopped at the ranch house nearby and thanked them. In fact, I'm gonna stop there someday. Unfortunately, I didn't find any chukars but I did see some tracks in the snow that were a couple days old, so I know they're there somewhere. I suspect they were at a little lower elevation. I'm homing in on them and expect I'll find them two days from now. I did see a group of eight sage grouse---the first I've seen in that area in three years. Now I know where they've been hiding on me. They knew where the cover was good.

Nemont,
So you only saw Baker from the air. Sweet and a great way to understand the area and the people. It is laughable that you say there are no big game animals on public lands around Baker. You must not have looked very hard.

I'm not going to debate half the shit your writing, your going off in a direction that I'v not been.

I've been on the ground in Baker, south to Alzada, North to Ophiem, lived at Sidney and Glendive for part of a summer working, all over your stomping grounds, even have family at Saco, (there ranchers).Do what they can to make a living. Seems like one in 4 years they make anything, so I understand ranchers alittle.

I'm not the one using the welfare rancher term. I'm not consumed by ranchers so take a breath. My posts have to do with ranchers that abuse the land, bitch about wildlife eating all the forage, running cattle on the winter range, then bitching cause the elk are in their haystacks. Oh and not allowing hunting during the bitching.

My family members that live in Saco, don't ask for anything, they work hard run alot of country, hell they don't have time to Bitch. They do however have neighbors that have learned to use the system. This thread isn't about that anyway.

It's about having contest for hunting animals, and hunting will survive this but even if you only offend a hand full of people this time, and a hand full next time there's a good chance that some day you'll of shit in your own mess kit. Contest are plain bad for the sport, and if you did have some of those hairy legged, tofu eating Granola's over there you'd know the resentment.

FYI Nemont They Vote.

Until the majority of public grazing land is in at least "good" condition I'll keep using the term "welfare ranchers".
Well, if northern UT is any indication you will be getting to use that term for a LONG time. There are hundreds to possibly thousands of acres of public ground be converted from 'good' to 'poor' or maybe 'fair' condition by the BLM and UT DWR every year! Most if not all of the projects are supported/funded by folks like the Audobon Society, The Nature Conservancy, RMEF, MDF, etc... :D

PS- Just pointing out my dislike for the 'poor', 'fair', 'good', 'excellent' rating system. It's used by people with out a proper understanding of what they mean. Seral states are much more accurate.

Pointer,

Many on this board struggle with terms like "poor", "good", and "excellent"...

Do you think they'd understand seral stages of plant/habitat succession?

If you want to start 1pointers environmental "collage" for hunttalk...be my guest. I'll sit back and enjoy the show.

...go ahead and enlighten we unwashed... o great one.

"It shows by the way you continue to bash EVERY rancher, it is guys that are so radically against grazing that continue to make it easy for the people who do abuse the range to continue to protray themselves as victims. If radicals, such as yourself and others on this board would appear to offer an reasonable front then Bad ranchers would be seen for what they are. However, I never expect any of the people who think like you to do anything other then the wild eyed, screaming and shouting like Jon Marvel. Want to bet whom Jon Tester will side with, Conrad was a slam dunk but Tester will side with ranchers because the other side of the issue will be so politically distasteful and dangerous to his future he will embrace the "family rancher", the poor downtrodden public lands rancher. All because the radicals can't figure out a way to appear to be middle of the road and reasonable."

Excellent comment Nemont. I wish I could get the link to a recent letter to the editor from a radical anti-grazer from Lolo to back your point up. She was trying to claim that Tester and Schweitzer were in bed with the livestock producers. Then she went off on a rant about Y. P. bison and predators. Just another zealot like Ithaca with NO VOICE!

NHY,

You dont agree that trying to get someone like elkcheese to understand plant succession would be all but impossible?

I mean really...talk about a waste of time.

Heck, once I shuck your attitude, I usually get a new perspective from your learned diatribes. Is that a waste of time? I don't think so.

is this class accessible to short-bus travelers ?

Only if you keep your tongue off the window....
...and the flag pole during winter! :D

Buzz- Might be fun for some to think about how you can have 'poor' condition range that has never seen livestock or have one weed. Or that you can have 'excellent' condition range that has had 90% of the forage eaten off by livestock! What should I charge for admission?? I may just have to give it a shot. Let me go through some files of pictures and see if I can't come up with enough to actually illustrate a few of the points.

LOL Ithica...
