It could be 50% of the ranchers are responsible grazers but 70% of the land is controlled by the 50% who are not.
Good point, Nemont. I've been waiting years for someone to point that out. The corporate ranches are probably the worst. Check out how much public grazing land Simplot Corp. and Packard (from Hewlet-Packard) have. I was hunting a new area (to me) today on some public land that actually was in pretty good shape. I'd say about half the grazed land I walked across in a four hour hike was in good condition. I was so surprised I almost stopped at the ranch house nearby and thanked them. In fact, I'm gonna stop there someday. Unfortunately, I didn't find any chukars but I did see some tracks in the snow that were a couple days old, so I know they're there somewhere. I suspect they were at a little lower elevation. I'm homing in on them and expect I'll find them two days from now. I did see a group of eight sage grouse---the first I've seen in that area in three years. Now I know where they've been hiding on me. They knew where the cover was good.
