I'm not hell bent on anything. I just think we should try and look at all angles of this terrible situation. The media and governments, plus nearly every expert in the field, across the world, all seem to be on pretty much the same page and giving out data for how bad this is. Shouldn't we question some of this and make sure what we are being told is absolute? I agree that this is a very bad disease and will kill thousands of more people and likely thousands of Americans. I'm just trying to wrap my head around if this is 2x worse than normal or 100x worse than a normal year or 1,000x. That info isn't being passed out freely from what I have seen.

Fixed it for you, no worries.

We live in a representative democracy with the reality of trusting those in the right positions to receive, assimilate the facts, and agree on good decisions to keep constituents safe. Certainly, we are blessed with the freedom to ask questions and get answers which satisfy our concerns. But in this fast paced pandemic-stressed world today, suggesting that all the data and analysis be vetted and made public prior to timely actions is unrealistic, as well as unsafe. Suggesting an attempt to "put the genie back into the bottle" is not helpful either.

I'm sorry, but if you have watched the media and government the last few years and trust what they say...then we will just have to agree to disagree. I'm not trying to vet all the data. I'm just looking at what everyone agrees is the worst case to date, Italy. They average 1700 deaths per day with peaks during the flu season. They are now averaging 300-400 Corona deaths per day to folks 80+. I'm questioning if that is extraordinary or just pretty bad.

Interesting quote
By testing everyone and not just those who showed symptoms, local authorities were able to quarantine asymptomatic carriers—something that could not be achieved with more typical testing methods used to confirm COVID-19 in people already showing signs of the illness.

"We were able to contain the outbreak here because we identified and eliminated the 'submerged' infections and isolated them," said Crisanti, who was taking part in the experiment during his sabbatical, speaking to Financial Times. "That is what makes the difference."

"trusting those in the right positions"

I was not referring to the media or to whatever your version of the "government" may be ... but to the duly elected congressional delegations and the duly elected executive branch. You really have no other prerogative than to "trust" in their analysis and decisions. You do have the freedom to be skeptical and to demand answers to your questions, but relief to such demand may require patience. As a pragmatist, I have to ask, "To what positive end does your disbelief / skepticism serve?"

No proclamation has been made, yet. Until an order is inked as official, the border with Canada remains open w/ the ordered restrictions inked earlier re: U.K, PRC, Iran, etc.

Most recent set of Proclamation(s):

I am struggling to understand why some people seem hell bent on something, I don't know, proving this is a hoax? That we shouldn't care about it? I honestly don't understand why people are wasting their time trying to suggest that this isn't serious. They're treating statistics like the old adage "the solution to pollution is dilution"

If you're looking at death rates and trying to say this isn't a big deal then dive deep and compare the death rate in Lombardy to "normal" and then ask you're self and you venture outside if we're actually doing enough to slow the spread.

Agreed.

My wife was working the ICU her last rotation of med school, she had a patient come in with ARDs from Influenza... essentially face down on the bed with a ton of tubes coming out of them.

Not a good situation for the patient, and ate up medical resources.

In normal times with a few of these patients here and there + all the normal stuff things are pretty stressful in the ICU, from speaking with her if you had 10 of these patients come in at once at a major hospital would be a shit show (Covid-19 seems to be sending some people into ARDs). Not to mention trying to figure out how to deal with Covid patients that have tons of other comorbidities.

I have a number of friends who are MDs, they all agree this is serious. I've known all of them since I was in elementary/middle school, I can't speak for all the politicians out there, but I can say none of the medical professionals I'm close with have any agenda other than trying to keep people alive.

The purpose of the skepticism would be to prevent ourselves from being tricked by the Chinese into testing and quarantining for the common cold while they buy our stock market dip and own us.

Wuhan had a major biological facility of some kind nearby. China shipped people all over the world after they new about the virus. China announced it and quarantined Wuhan at a very convenient time for them to shut down their economy with less damage that other times. China is getting back up and running.

This is really bad either way. Either a bunch of people are about to get really sick, or we’ve just destroyed our economy over nothing. We should be very careful about both.

I’m not bent on proving that this is a hoax. I’m trying to figure out if it is or isn’t.

Worthy consternation ... now figure out how to get that genie back in the bottle.

If nothing has happened in Italy, you prove it with the numbers, you lift all the nutty guideline and tell people to put their $1000 checks into the stock market and go back to work.

If this is a mistake, we’ve been hurt, but the answer is not to double down.

Trudeau stated Friday evening. Likely when Trump will have his Proclamation entered. It would be great if we went by when they made their comments though the difference is we are under Defense Protection Act whereas Trudeau has to jump through various red tape parliament hoops - they want it to begin at the same time... Makes sense.

The Canada.-U.S. border will likely be closed to non-essential travel by Friday night as the two countries move quickly to curtail the rapid spread of the new coronavirus, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday.

Bill Gates owns the patent on the COVID-19 variation used in animal testing. Fun fact

Since links and facts are in the thread title, can you link us to the Patent or other provide a reliable source of truth for that statement?
