DIY dehydrated meals are not all their cracked up to be. It's a lot of work and then they usually take a LONG time to properly rehydrate. Good when weight is a premium but not so good when time is a premium. That said, I prefer them to Mtn House.
Mtn House is great for a day or two...but a week is torture. This year I'm trying to go with more "normal" foods. Cured meats, oatmeal, granola, dried fruits, couscous minute rice cooked in instant soups. I'm even experimenting with some better ramen soups from the Asian market. Some of them are very good, though high in MSG/sodium.
I'm surprised no one has come up with a better solution to this problem. I've heard Harmony House makes some good backpacking food...but never tried it.
