CO Mountain Lion Ballot Initiative: Continuous Updates

I literally heard a commercial on the radio from defenders of wildlife ( I believe) asking for donations so they can back science and ban trophy hunting of lions
BS has long been the foundation of every political argument. At least there is consistency in both sides in that they are begging for money.

This is great - it would be greater if there were some businesses that weren't hunting/shooting/dead critter affiliated.

@TOGIE sent me some No on 127 stickers. I'm heading out to place them in Canon City businesses.127 vote no sticker.jpg

Cleanest Only clean thing on my truck.

The most common political yard sign in small conservative Canon City is No on 127. Talked to someone today who is going to the capital Rally against 127 next week.

Take it or leave it but I thought I would share. I sent the following email to the majority of my contacts who I know are CO voters. Feel free to rip from this as you see fit if you are planning to reach out within your networks.

Hi friends,

I am reaching out to encourage you to consider voting NO on Proposition 127 in this election, and to provide info on this topic and ballot initiative. If passed, Prob 127 would ban hunting mountain lions, lynx, and bobcats. As proposed, this would bypass the Colorado Parks and Wildlife's (CPW) ability to use science to manage and support our shared wildlife resources. As a hunter and steward of our public lands, I firmly believe these decisions can only be made based on science and by the experts. Looking at this ballot initiative from a larger perspective, I am also deeply worried about the intersection of hunting bans/anti-hunting sentiments and conservation funding. Money generated from hunting license fees and excise taxes on guns, ammunition and angling equipment provide 60% of the funding for state wildlife agencies, which manage most of the wildlife in the U.S. (full NPR article found here). As fewer Americans hunt or understand it, and we continue to see these types of ballot initiatives in our western states, we seem to be moving in a direction that can end up hurting rather than helping our wildlife and ecosystems.

If Prop 127 passes, it would impact the management of mountain lions and bobcats (lynx is an endangered species in both Colorado and at the federal level so hunting this cat is already prohibited) and the language could set a dangerous precedent for management of other wildlife resources. There is concern within the hunting community that if Prop 127 passed, it will be easier from a legal standpoint to limit CPW and biologists from managing our shared resources and impact hunting regulations for other wild game such as deer, elk, and other common game.

Under the watch of CPW, the population of mountain lions has increased since they took over management oversight in 1965. Current statistics also show that bobcat populations are stable and growing in some areas. Once an issue gets to the ballot, experts in the area are not allowed to weigh in on the topic. However, the attached high-level summary that CPW put together before this became a ballot initiative speaks to the role this agency has in successfully navigating Colorado's rapidly growing population and that impact on animals and the ecosystems. The folks with CPW are the experts on our wild game management plans - not us common voters.

Finally, the terminology with "Trophy Hunting" in this proposition is misleading. Trophy Hunting is already illegal in CO as defined as "wanton waste" laws. Lion hunters are required to prepare the meat to eat just like elk and deer hunters.

Below are some additional resources that I found that may help shed some light on this initiative and I wanted to share it with you all before you cast your votes over the next few weeks. Happy to chat more if you have questions or simply want to talk through this.

saw this over on rokslide

sounds like senator dylan roberts, who is seemingly hunters strongest ally in this state anymore, has had this brought to his attentions and he is concerned about it.

i suggest people send many e-mails and phone calls to representatives, cpw leadership, and the AG. this feels illegal - i'd be curious if anyone with some legal expertise would agree.
