Bill with no sporting reps, three landowners on Commission one vote from passage

If this passes I can envisage a very destructive campaign among Montana sportsmen encouraging consumers to NOT buy beef raised in Montana. When the general public sees the signs outside and inside the stores they will want to know what that's all about. I think they will be outraged when they learn the reason. The ranchers in Alberta and North Dakota are probably smiling about now.

SB 306 was amended in a conference committee to now require three of seven Fish and Wildlife commissioners be landowners. There's nothing in the bill that any hunters/anglers be on the commission. We need to contact state Senators and House reps now and ask that the Commission includes balance that represents everyone with an interest in public fish, wildlife and habitat.

Hey hunters, SB 306 is up on the floor of both the House and Senate today with three required landowners, and no representation from sportsmen and sportswomen. An amendment is proposed to make it three representatives of sporting organizations. Contact your Rep. and Senator and tell them to vote for balance on the commission, please.

Hey Montana sportsmen and sportswomen, it's your last chance to weigh in on SB 306 before it heads to the governor's desk. This bill would require that three of the seven Fish and Wildlife Commission members be landowners, with no sporting interests required to be on it. Contact your legislators today and urge a NO vote on SB 306.

SB 306, sponsored by Sen. Mike Lang, R-Malta, would require that three of the seven Fish and Wildlife Commissioners be landowners. This bill came out of a conference committee after it originally proposed four out of seven commissioners be landowners.

This is still bad policy that will give one constituency preference over the broad public interest in our public fish and wildlife resources. We need Montana hunters, anglers and wildlife enthusiasts to speak up against this bill.

Please contact your state House and Senate member and tell them to vote NO on SB 306 TODAY. The bill has passed second reading in both chambers and will get a final vote very soon. You can find your legislators by clicking HERE, and leave an email message by going HERE. Or you can call 406-444-4800 and leave a message telling legislators to vote NO on SB 306.

WRITE YOUR OWN MESSAGE, but hit these points:

  • The Fish and Wildlife Commission is charged with managing the public’s wildlife, and should consider all interests including landowners, hunters, anglers and wildlife enthusiasts.
  • Hunters and anglers provide the vast majority of the funding for Montana FWP, and nobody likes taxation without representation. Their representatives deserve to have seats at that table.
  • Montana FWP always considers the views of landowners in decisions on wildlife management, and has for decades.
  • We need broad representation on the Commission, and we already have a requirement that a landowner serve on the Commission.
