Any Doctors here lol

This has been an informative thread fo me. I returned from a snowboarding trip a few weeks ago and started experiencing hip pain that shot down the outside of my thigh shortly after returning home. Doc thought it was hip bursitis and shot me with cortisone. Fast forward 2 weeks, no improvement from the shot. I was gimping around but functional at least. I delivered some lumber to one of my crews and helped out at my daughter’s soccer practice. That night I woke up at 2 AM with the worst pain of my life shooting from my hip down through my calf/shin. It literally brought me to tears which was a first for me in the pain department. ER said my x-ray showed probable L4/L5/S1 spinal degeneration (MRI tomorrow). Meanwhile I’m bedridden. I can’t sit, stand or walk for more than 30 seconds before the level 10 pain grabs hold. It’s a scary spot to be in for a fit, healthy, 43 year old. Hopefully the MRI reveals something that can start me down a treatment path, because I’ve seen no improvement from anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxers, and bed rest ( like I even have a choice). Thanks for listening, this effing sucks especially since it’s opening weekend for turkeys here, and we are supposed to take my daughter on a Disney cruise in about 10 days.🙁

We just got back from our second Disney cruise. I can give you some insight on what you are up against, depending on the ports you chose. PM if you want.

I appreciate that. Unless I see some major improvement I’m not going to be able to travel. Any sitting, standing, or walking quickly leads to crippling pain throughout my left leg. I may try to send Grammy in my place. It’s my Daughter’s first big trip (airplane rides, cruise boat, etc), so I’m hoping they can go. It depends on whether I’m looking at surgery or not I suppose.

Bird dogs ! The exercise , it helped me immensely .

Belated congrats, I can't imagine "no pain", can't remember the last time. Ok, barely remember, my back pain went away when they put me under for my shoulder surgery.

Update on my condition… Finally got my MRI results back and it looks like a herniated disc pushing on my sciatic nerve. My local doctors here are telling me I don’t need surgery. Just have to get the inflammation to calm down. The tricky part now is trying to find someone that I trust to give me an epidural Cortizone shot that’s not booked out six weeks. In the meantime, I did get a couple intramuscular Cortizone shots on either side of my spine as well as being put on prednisone and gabapentin yesterday. Hoping these new prescriptions help me get some relief and I don’t have to make significant lifestyle changes going forward. Anybody out there wanna share their herniated disc stories and give me some hope?

Have you tried a lifting belt to keep your core firm? That helps me with my degenerative disc disease pain for a bit.

PT is another option, not sure if you've done that. Didn't help me but everyone is different.

I've done research on disc problems, literature review indicates that fusing your back will help but cause more issues later. Prosthetic disc has much better long term outcomes. Just keep that in mind if it ever gets to that point.

Are you in a state with medical Marijuana? Heard it can do wonders for back pain without the worry associated with opiates

Ok , I’ve had several herniated discs , I’ve had a Laminectomy Discectomy on my L5-4 , and it didn’t help .
The best thing I’ve found is -Bird dog , plank , and torso crunches .
I’m 66 and pain free after years of back pain .
Do the bird dog , I swear by it .
NO SURGERY!

Epidurals have helped my wife with her L5-S1, and can be repeated every 3 months or so. She last had one in October and is getting another in May.
Guy I know just from doing business with him had an L5-S1 microdiscectomy a couple of weeks ago, where they just remove the portion of the disc pressing on the nerve; unfortunately had a spinal fluid leak and needed another surgery to fix it. Recovery is weeks, though, unlike fusion, which is 1-2 years recovery.

Good luck.

I’ve had two surgeries for L5/S1 herniation. I didn’t learn after my first round and reherniated the same spot 5 years later. Deadlifting caused my issues both times along with genetics.

They played with my back for 10 months the first round. Oxycodone and gavapentin. I took the oxy after work and to sleep. Gabapentin didn’t work at all. I went through the checklist of items for the insurance company - physical therapy, massage, cortisone shots, etc. I think I did everything except acupuncture. Nothing worked. They finally said surgery. Easy procedure and the pain was gone when I woke up.

Second round was way more painful to the point I couldn’t walk. Surgery results were the same.

I don’t have any long term issues except I’ll say no if you ask me to pick up a heavy weight off the ground. No back pain or quirks. I no longer run but can hike hard. I lift weights still, squat heavy but don’t deadlift. Backpack trips are fine.

First surgery was 14 years ago. Second surgery 9 years ago.

Just started PT as well as beginning to get a chiropractic regime going. According to the doctors, I just need to get the inflammation under control and I should be good but I am curious about long-term repercussions/lifestyle changes. Looking into a low profile belt and I had a friend tell me they had great success with a magnetic one. No weed in this state.

Try a couple different belts to see what works for you. I had to trial and error to find the one I liked.

As you better understand what causes a flair up, you'll start to figure out what you need to do to avoid it.

For me it's standing, so I carry portable chairs and stools for certain events and will just skip anything like a pit pass for a concert.

Sorry I don't have better info on a herniated disc, the one thing I don't currently have with my back pain

It can be a long process. Correct posture, hinging at the hip, strength and stabilization... I'm almost 5 years out from injury and the progress is great, but it still annoys me sometimes.

One of the biggest things that I think helped from my PT's recommendations was sleeping with my army of pillows. I get immense relief when sleeping on my side if my spine is supported by a pillow.
