And…we are off!

Great post and glad you made the best of it….I have to say that was some creative foods….lol

I figured I’d better do a gear review since this trip probably requires a little different gear than you might bring on an elk hunt.
On days I would be climbing to the top I would only wear a synthetic bottom base layer underneath Grundens Neptune bibs. I would wear my uninsulated Lowa Renegades with medium lite darn tough socks and I wore kenetrek gaitors. I brought yak trax to wear, but never wore them. Although in hind sight in the wet, leaf covered areas in the alders they would have been golden! But I think they would have been a pain in the rear fighting through the grass.
On top while I was climbing I’d only start out wearing a First lite merino. I think it’s the kiln hoodie. In my pack I’d have a fleece vest, that I’d put on while climbing if the wind picked up. While glassing I’d wear a puffy jacket under my softshell and if it was raining I’d put my grundens top on. I carried puffy pants with me, but never went through the effort to take off my bibs to put them on, I’d just move glassing spots when I got cold.
Trekking poles were a lifesaver for me, especially on the way down the steep slopes.
For a hat I just wore a goretex baseball cap with a wool beanie. I think the beanie is from Duluth trading.
Gloves, I brought a lot of gloves. Light leather gloves, merino liners, light gore Tex gloves, heavy mittens and rubber gloves. When I was climbing I’d wear merino liners under heavy duty surgical rubber gloves if it was raining or wet. This worked flawlessly. When I got to the glassing point the heavy mittens would come out. I wish I would have had a heavy pair of rubber gloves for boat days and when it was raining while glassing.
Waders were cabelas Alaskan pant waders. Cabelas used to make the best waders and these are 10 plus years old and still work great. They are boot foot but the boot is a lace up hiking boot. I tried not to do to much climbing in my waders, but they were more than capable if I needed to. Unfortunately, the quality of all things has been discussed on this forum and I will have to find a new brand in the near future.
