I shoot a custom 300 wsm built on a remington 700 action with a shillen barrel 21.75" long custom bolt. now here is my question i shoot factor federal ammo with barnes bullets and what i have been seeing is that i am blowing the primers out when i fire a round just started happening this last weekend does anyone have any ideas on what might be going on?

thanks

It sounds like you are getting excess pressure. I have never seen factory ammo do that though.

Any chance your gun was hot or you left the ammo in the sun? Sometimes leaving a box of bullet on the dash of the car can really screw them up.

Other than blown primers how did it shoot?

shooting about 1/4" groups at 100 yards. i had the barrel sear coated about 3 weeks ago and the ammo is from last year still had 16 rounds left over wondering if them sitting in my truck all summer and last winter did something.

Was extraction difficult? If it was excess pressure that popped the primer then you'd think the case would be pretty tough to get out of the chamber. The only other reason that I can think of that would cause the primer to back out would be a loose fit, and I'm not sure how that would happen from weather exposure. But if you're shooting quarter inch groups, it sounds like there isn't anything too wrong with that rifle. Try some new ammo.

try new ammo and check to see if you've got a lot copper fouling in your barrel. Sounds like high pressure, which could be several things, but I'd clean the barrel out before taking it to a smith and looking at the headspace/chamber.

How old is the barrel/How many rounds through it?

I think i need to clean it. the barrel is only 3 years old and has had maybe 100 rounds through it. thanks for the info guys..

Was there excessive oil in the chamber area when you started shooting ,this can do strange things !

You might want to consider scrubbing the chamber also. Fouling around the neck and shoulders can give excess pressure signs.

I will say that I do not use factory 300WSM ammo in my rifle anymore because it was way too hot for my rifle (Savage 10). After some reloading work, I discovered I couldn't even come close to published maximum.

A rough chamber or excessive head space might be an issue. I would certainly have your gunsmith check the headspace since you indicated it was a "custom" gun. Did Shillen cut the chamber?

Oh D@mn ! I thought you were refering to a different kind of 'Fouling of the Barrel', so to speak !

That is your Rifle.....not your Gun !
