A little help in CO

Im from TX, moved to CO several years ago. I went pronghorn hunting for the first time once in a unit that I was able to get a tag with no points the first year I was eligible. Except for being out hunting it was no fun. All the private had all the water etc. So I decided to build some points and try again. What I am having a hard time figuring out is how many points gets me in a unit that would be a decent hunt.

I am looking for a meat hunt. Dont care about horns or even if it is a doe. Just looking for a fun hunt that actually has a chance of harvesting.

Thanks

CO is pretty tough for antelope. Most are on the eastern side of the state which is pretty much all private. There are some decent opportunities, but it takes a little research. Cross reference the draw report with units that have some public access. Likely easier to get a rifle mule deer tag and try to shoot a forky or doe!

But antelope meat >>>>>> deer meat!

Maybe it depends on the state. My experience in NM, I'd take a fork horn deer over a pronghorn any day!
I would agree. If you shoot a pronghorn buck that’s been chasing does all day, probably going to be a little tougher. I’ve had a pronghorn doe that tasted almost as good as the elk I shot the year prior!

Besides something new to hunt that’s one of the main things I am looking for, trying the meat. Never had it. Thanks for the info.

Pronghorn is my favorite game meat *if* you practice good field care. Get it skinned and cooled as fast as humanly possible.

Pretty sure @Big Fin is who said "the only problem with pronghorn is that they aren't as big as elk."

Thanks for the info. I have been watching a ton of stuff about them and that seems to come up a lot.

Well, you're a coues guy, obviously you're into itty bitty horns
haha, never said I was "into" shooting fork horns, just said IMO they taste better than Pronghorn. I was just responding to NRPATE05's post about taking a mule deer doe or fork horn instead of waiting for a Pronghorn tag if meat was the goal.

Wonder if Az or Nm pronghorn taste different? I've only had Colorado and Wyoming pronghorn, very delicious. And I used to hunt coues, thought they tasted better than mulies, sure as hell easier to pack out 😂

I like Pronghorn, just prefer deer. I've had one Wyoming Pronghorn, thought it was stronger than the NM ones, so I don't know. Maybe it's just me. lol

I’ve shot a lot of antelope and a fair amount of bucks during the rut. By far the best meat in the freezer. I haven’t had a bad one yet. But I get them cut fast and ice as fast as I can.
