Would you change your state of residency to burn points?

I moved to wyoming for a couple reasons and hunting was amongst the top few. I would never leave here for hunting purpose as only alaska has better resident oppurtunity. The problem with people who move to use points is now any state with points those tags are effectively OIL. So you move and draw a "great" tag then what? your stuck hunting CO otc and being a NR in rest of western states unless you move again. Good hunting isnt waiting 30 years to draw a tag its succesfully hunting incredible country every year and enjoying it including not being over run with people.

You got to keep moving. Hit it and quit it. Life of a gangsta ass hunter!!

This has always been one of many considerations in my retirement planning. Was pretty set on Wyoming as in my opinion they have the best resident hunting options of any of the lower 48 states. My wife has been diagnosed with Parkinsons and I'm thinking that I may end up staying in Texas for her to be closer to medical specialists. I know southern Wyoming is close to Denver and that still might be an option but the cabin in the woods far from civilization that I had in my mind is probably not going to be a reality.

If it was strictly a hunting thing and that was the number one priority I agree with rogerthat. Downsize and spend a few years in each western state as you burn points and explore what they have to offer.

Oh yeah. One other consideration you need to think of is the individual income tax rates in each state. That is another big advantage to Wyoming. Theirs is zero.

There’s no sales tax in MT. Once you get used to it, you get pissed when you travel and have to pay it.

Moving to Colorado for solely for the purpose of a single elk tag doesn’t make a lot of financial sense to me, you could probably just buy the tag and probably be money ahead in the long run.

Point creep in Colorado and wanting to hunt a once in a lifetime elk unit got me to thinking. Would you ever consider moving to burn your points as a resident instead of a non resident? As bad as I want to hunt certain units in Colorado, I don’t think I would move away from Montana to do it.

Do you WFH? I think that’s really the only way it would make sense IMO. Say you own a house in MT, I would rent that out for X number of months while you go to Colorado and get an apartment to establish residency. Not sure how long it takes in Colorado but Montana is 180 days so if same and if you timed it right you might be gone from Montana less than a year.

Not sure I would do it either, maybe Alaska.

I do not work from home. Good plan though. Like I said in the original post, I don’t think I would ever do this for a single tag. I will admit that elk hunting played a huge role in my decision to move to MT.

I am going to move to Utah with my 25 points and draw a Manti Elk tag and be just like everyone else that lives there that has a YouTube channel.

I am going to get 17 people to help me find a bull and then have three people watch it and navigate me in for a kill shot via radio. Then I am going to shoot it and act like I did something special. lol

Hard to say for sure without knowing the unit you are talking about (and I understand if you don’t want to post), but for many units you indeed can.
