Wolves pounce on hunting dogs

07:18 PM MST on Thursday, January 13, 2005

Associated Press

LEWISTON -- Wolves have been killing hunting dogs recently.
Kevin Stamper of Grangeville lost his two-year-old blue tick/walker hound mix to a wolf pack near Grangeville on January Second.
Stamper says he's never seen wolves that low before.
Snow can force wolves to lower elevations. And populations have risen since reintroduction ten years ago.
Steve Nadeau is the wolf coordinator for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game in Boise. He says hunters shouldn't let loose their hounds if they see wolf tracks around.
While Idaho will soon get more leeway to manage wolves next month because of new federal rules -- hunters can only protect their pets from wolves on their own land, not while out hunting.
Nadeau says any wolf kill will be investigated to ensure the killing was justified.

Yeah, and lions and bears tear up dogs every year too....

Goes with the territory...if you dont like the risks stay on the porch with your hounds and slouch hat...

LOL buzz I just posted it ... I happen to agree with you... I don't think a person sould even take their pet up hunting either. LOL

What is the new 10(j) rule?
The new 10(j) rule governing management of wolves in the experimental area took effect February 7, 2005. The rule allows more flexibility for citizens of Idaho:

Private Land

1. Wolves seen attacking livestock , livestock herding and guarding animals, and dogs on private land can be shot by the landowners without prior written authorization. It must be reported within 24 hours and there must be evidence of a wolf attack such as dead or wounded livestock, trampled vegetation, and mixed wolf and livestock sign. State lands are considered private for the purpose of this rule, and permitted livestock producers on state land can kill a wolf attacking their livestock.

Public Land

2. Wolves attacking, chasing, molesting, or harassing livestock and livestock herding and guarding animals on public federal lands can be shot by grazing permittees and guide/outfitters that use livestock as part of their federal land-use permit, on their active livestock allotments, and on public ceded lands by Tribal members, without prior written authorization. It must be reported within 24 hours and there must be physical evidence of a wolf attack.
3. Under some circumstances landowners and public land grazing permittees and guide/outfitting permittees may be issued written authorization to use rubber bullets to harass wolves, or shoot-on-sight permits to kill wolves on their private land or their federal grazing federal allotments.

Also under the new rule, wolves determined to be causing unacceptable impacts to deer and elk populations can be controlled. This is allowed only after the States complete science-based documents that have undergone public and peer review and have been approved by the USFWS.

Looks like the hound hunters, bird hunters, etc. who are on public lands cant legally kill a wolf for ripping their dogs...

just read this on the Us fish and wildlife website reguarding 10j rule..

If you kill a wolf attacking your dog, mark the location and protect the evidence as best you can, you must report it within 24 hours.. i am going to have to read all 27 pages to get to the bottom of this...i have 2 chesapeak bay retreivers that i am training because they both are still pups.
i dont use dogs for bear or mt lion...i do use them for birds though.i go up to idaho city alot due to my friends having livestock up there.. with all the wolf activity up there who nows what will happen...
