Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

Whats your most accurate rifle?

Polytech M14 clone with all USGI NM components.

You miss, it’s on you. Built around the M118 LR ammunition . Basically a 175gr OTM 7.62 round.

I’ve shot this to 1000 M. (1093 yards). CAFAD2F3-ECA0-4C73-B755-3E4EE583B6CA.jpeg

The day I got the rifle back from the smith. Shorty made these guns for the MN ANG marksmanship unit when he worked for the state.

And I was shooting the clay pigeons from 200 yards.

AR15A4 with a white oak precision service rifle upper. 1:7.7 twist to fire 77 -80 gr OTM ammo. Also a 1000 yard gun.

I'm actually looking to build something new and custom though
I’m in the same boat.

Last week I pulled the trigger and ordered a Big Horn Origin action, criterion 18” barrel chambered in .280 Remington and a trigger tech primary trigger. Barrel is a 20-22 weeks out.

Still not sure what I want for a stock /chassis.

Optics I’m putting a Burris RT15 on it.
Probably hang it with Ken farrel or badger ordnance rings.

I saved for a couple years and built a custom rifle I really wanted. It shoots well. 0.5" groups with off the shelf federal premium accubonds. The last pic is just under 4" at 800. I'm really happy with it especially with all the research, time and effort I put into building the rifle.

It’s a ball when it comes together like that.

I had a pair of old Remington 788, 243 & 308, I pillar bedded and polished, worked the triggers. Wide open groups over 2” to sub MOA. 5 shots under a dime type stuff.

Amazing what some simple work will do for you.

Most accurate I ever had was a 788 Rem in 222 Rem. Honest 1/4" rifle! Had a 7mm Rem Mag at the same time, Sako L61R that hung just over 1/2" like clock work. I shot a lot better in those days, long time ago. Today my best would be a toss up between two 243's and my 6.5x06, depending on the bullet in the 6.5x06. All three run consistently right at 1/2"! Best group I ever shot though came from my 25-06 using a 100gr Sierra Match bullet. .111" at 100yds. Couldn't tell there wasmore than one hole in the target through the scope, 3-9x set at 9x. So shot an extra at another spot and sure enough hit that spot. Had to be right at the target to notice the hole was just a bit out of round. Took that rifle home and have never shot it again to today, didn't want to jinx myself! Used that rifle for deer quite a bit with 117gr Hornady's and it kept them right under 3/4". Wish I could find another 788 in 222 Rem, boy was that a shooter!
Remington killed the 788 because it was outperforming the 700 action. It was supposed to be an introductory cheap gun kind like the stevens 200 and now the savage axis.

Of modern production rifles, the 788 had the fastest lock times adding to its inherent accuracy.

My most accurate rifle is ALSO my heaviest rifle, 10 lbs. 10 oz. (w/o bipod) Therefore it’s not my favorite rifle to tote.

I have 3 that no matter the condition, will put 5 holes sub-moa every time.
Same here, but I have to one up you with I have 4 of them. Actually I just sold the most accurate of all of them and it was the cheapest one of all of them by far! A savage 110 stainless in .243Win I sold it cuz I had not shot it in 8 years and to fund the Seekins Havok.

My polytech M14S that’s been converted to all USGI national match. Built around M118LR ammo

Still dialing in the bolt guns.

The CMP service rifle is right with it too. White oak armament CMP upper. Absolutely phenomenal groups with the 77GR OTM ammo.

My TIkka Roughtech 300WM is my best, here is the 3 shot zero group off a bag at 100m with Nosler 180gr BTs. As a side note, my first rifle (I still have in the safe) is a crappy Remington 710 package with a Bushnell 3x9 on it that LOVES Core Lokts. It will shoot about .75 even with a horrible trigger and bolt. Dang thing killed everything I ever shot at with it. If one of the ring screws hadn't sheared off in the receiver it would still be in the rotation......I may have to send it to a smith finally to see what could be done.

My Savage 110 in .270 Win ad my Savage Axis II in .223 Rem both shoot better than I can. Both right at .5-.75 MOA. My .270 will shoot sub 3" groups on my 400 yard range with boring consistency.. Of course in ideal conditions..

Yep. They couldn’t stand making money and figured they’d develop something that didn’t work and push that at a lower price. ;)

The truth is, if they sold both at the same profit margin, and consumers wouldn’t pay for the 788, then it’s not Remington that killed the 788. Consumers buying a cheaper product did. I’m not saying the 788 didn’t have advantages over the 700. I’m saying that once a decent alternative at a substantially lower cost existed, not enough consumers were willing to pay what a 788 cost. Remington could care less which model put profit in their coffers. Consumers killed the 788.

Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 6.5 CM with a Z3 mounted hits exactly where you aim. #2 is Ruger Predator in 6.5 with VH3 places everything within 1". Custom handload ammo.

Don't have the most accurate anymore. It was a 788 Remington in 222 Rem. What I got now? Depends on what day you want to know about. 6.5x06 Is super accurate as is both my 243's. 243's one Rem 700 and one Mossberg Patriot. best group ever came from a Rem 700 in 25x06. .111", no idea how that happened. Was using 100gr SMK and 53.0grs IMR 4350 with Herter primer's.
