Your questions are good and very reasonable. Unfortunately, on this site help related to specific hunts is thin and not often in coming. No matter how much you participate. Even via private message have seen precious little help when drawing rare tags a number of guys have drawn but chose to not step up and give even a few basic heads up about.

Just the culture of this site. Great guys but who happen to be mute or deaf and mute.

Do not know 42 at all. Or I am "one of those guys"

Hypothetical scenario: Someone posts, "In antelope district 42, go to such and such area, I've seen some boone and crocket bucks there"

Anyone who googles "antelope district 42" sees this, then the place is over crowded with hunters.

This may be an exaggeration, but that is why many would not want to share very detailed information.

You will find a ton of helpful information on this site and some pretty detailed stuff too. You will also get some good help if you private message the right people. But you can't expect a detailed answer to every question about a certain area.

This site is whatever the collective members want it to be. And, just when you think you know what the site is about, it starts drifting and changing to something else. Evolution happens despite what you hear from your Preacher.

In real life we have all told someone where we killed/saw/hunted game only to find out that somebody we trusted/knew/met then let everybody at the local watering establishment know the spot.

I am guessing if you do a search on Unit 42 on Google, you will find someone, on some board, that tells what a great hunt they had and how everybody should put in for that tag. Who knows how many people jump on these posts. Even if only 2 people jump on the information, that might ruin the hunt for the person who originally shared the information.

One way to find out about Unit 42 is to lace on the boots and go hunt/hike the unit.

There is tons of good information on this site, beyond bragging photos. And, if you want the site to change, start posting GPS coordinates of every good deer/elk/antelope you find. Start drawing maps to your favorite hunting spots and maybe others will follow your lead.

Most of the guys here will go the extra mile to assist fellow hunters but you better be willing to stick around and interact...give and take, if you will. Doing you homework, mutual respect, courtesy, and asking intelligent questions will get you just about anything you're looking for.

And of course everyone on this sight has done all of there own scouting and has never received any help or advice from anyone else. It is pretty easy to give advise without giving out your "secret spot".

Talk about taking things out of context.
If you actually read the thread in question, you will see that there were helpful posts about the quality of the hunting unit as well as in invitation to share via private message. I think it is surprising how quickly the helpful posts actually came in when you consider the percentage of hunters that actually have information about a specific unit, and then how many of those hunters are actually on a given forum and not out scouting for the next hunt.

No matter how much you give, there will always be people who think you should give more.

I have been at this game (western hunting) for a relatively short time, compared to most of the members of this forum, but here is my opinion and what I have learned over the last 8 years about "DIY Hunting".

The most rewarding experiences I have had as a hunter have been when I went into an area that I had never hunted in before, and learned it for myself until I eventually was able to successfully fill my tag. I think this is the essence of "DIY Hunting", and is why I continue to do it. For me the shot is the easy part; my enjoyment comes from the planning, preparation, learning an area, spotting the game, and making the stalk.

Having said this I have learned many invaluable lessons about hunting from this forum and others I have frequented. However, none of these lessons have included walk to this point, wait til dawn, glass, shoot big mule deer. If you respect the hard work, sweat, blood that the members of the forum have put into finding their honey holes, and ask reasonable questions, you will be mentored by some extremely talented hunters. If you ask for a point on a map where you can shoot a 85" antelope you will hear crickets. "DIY Hunting is a little different than "DIY Home Improvements"

I've had a much different experience than what the OP quoted from someone else. I have gotten lots of good info on hunts for different species in different states. I've also proferred advice/info to others on hunts for different species in different states. Follow NHY's advice and hang around some and I'd bet you'll be suprised what you can pick up. Not too much will be blatantly posted with super detailed specifics, but there's lots of good info shared here.

To the OP, feel free to start the "pay it forward" attitude by giving us the info on your best hunting spot that is accessible to the public? Species and state doesn't matter, I'm willing to hunt anything about anywhere...

I should draw a Unit 42 antelope tag this year and I am seeking some input from others who have previously hunted the unit. We hunted unit 90-1 last year and had a great time. I know that Unit 42 is probably a step down from Unit 90-1 but what can I expect? There is a lot of private property in Unit 42 but there is also a large walk-in area and a HMA on the western side of the unit.

What can you tell me about the unit? Will I find huntable goats on the HMA and the walk-in area? Do I need to seek/pay for access on private property? What quality of goats will I see? Should I wait a couple weeks after the opener for the crowds to die down? Should I go early and try with my bow?

Honestly you got a better response tha most who ask similar questions. And now your diappointed with the response? Concidering how much information you have contributed to the forum I"d say you did pretty good.

Just put your location as MT and you will get the most responses to your questions compared to Texas which will get you the least amount of help it seems. Oh or Alaska seems to work pretty good as well from what I've seen on the forum.

Shocked about the responses? Why? Because GPS coords weren't given publicly?

Yes, we are dedicated to DIY. But DIY means a lot of things. Search the threads for the help we provide. From a guy asking the types of meals to bring on a week-long elk hunt, to gear reviews to laws/regulations circulating to road closures to season dates to draw deadlines to wolf lies/SFW/Don Peay (oops), you'll hear us discuss many topics. But we won't give GPS coordinates.

If you are a long-time lurker, you know this is not a brag board. Except when it comes to schmalts and his assless chaps adventures But if you are a newbie, take a look around, peruse all the threads and see what we're all about.
