You beat me to it. My son killed a cow elk many years ago now. It was the worst game retrieval, nothing else is really close.

“Sugar creek”. Son shot an elk a mile and a half down hill from the road. It took us 6 hours to carry up a load.

Shot one within a stones throw of the bottom of the draw in the shady area of this picture. From the truck to the bottom was .78 miles in a straight line.

Took me 21 hours to get that bull out by myself.

First and last time...I'm not going to even look there if I draw again.

I hate deadfall, and this drainage is especially miserable. It’s also not a coincidence that the biggest bull I’ve killed came out of here.

I found a group in the Uncompahgre once down in a hole so steep I was unsure if I could get myself out let alone a elk.

I have done some backpacking and scouting in this country and found good elk sign. I keep thinking about hunting in here but between being thick AF jungle and steep AF I have not done it. Maybe 2025.

I once shot a cow elk on my neighbors place. With a 12 gauge shotgun. Sucked bad because his tractor was a bitch to get started. Then it took forever for him to drive it over to my house. Never again. mtmuley

I shot a cow in November one year up in the Elkhorns. Maybe 3-4 miles across the prairie and up the mountain. Day warmed up pretty good, those damn rattlers came out. I was afraid to walk through the gauntlet, so I called the neighbors who brought horses up. They shot all the snakes on the way in. Only time one of my elk went out on horseback...mostly. I felt guilty and still packed a front.

I shot a bull one time somewhere between Mtmuley and the Dutton ranch. It’s was something like 1k elevation gain in 3/4 full of deadfall’s. All I remember is chanting to myself “let the bodies hit the floor, let the bodies hit the floor” all the way to the top
