What do you consider a "Boone & Crockett" animal? Awards or All-Time?

Just curious. I read things that say how many Boone & Crockett submissions from each state, etc. Are they talking minimum for Awards or All-Time?

I keep meaning to submit my elk from 2013 but haven't ever gotten around to it. It costs $40 to submit and it just barely makes the "Awards" category so not sure if it even counts?

I have never cared about the books.....my first whitetail with a bow is a net p/y and I haven't considered entering it.

I saw your bull at Joe's shop before I moved to Montana, and that thing is a hoss. Score means nothing to me when they are stellar animals like your bull.

There's a ton of really awesome animals that will not make B&C, even the 3-yr awards. In my opinion, any animal that officially net scores high enough to make either the awards or all-time book is a rare and spectacular trophy.

I've entered every animal I've ever taken that makes either the awards or all-time book. B&C is a great hunting organization, and if I'm going to take an official measurer's time to stop by and put the real, honest numbers on an animal, I'll be sending in my $40 to the organization if it qualifies. It's not really about books. I haven't entered all the P&Y qualifiers - as about any animal without milk on its lips will qualify for P&Y.

Never even measured one of mine outside of 2 that I thought came close to the mythical 30" muley claim.

That's true. I bet it took a little over an hour for the guy to measure my elk and they can't accept a penny in compensation for it. Have to go to class to be an official scorer on their own dime too.

Greenhorn has it right, cant add much to that.

Score isn't the only thing to consider, and IMO, many get really hung up on numbers.

I've always walked away from a hunt feeling pretty good if I did the hunt justice and took the best animal I could find given the wide variety of circumstances in each effort.

My family and I have made several $40 contributions to B&C entering animals, but at the same time, we aren't going to have to worry about going broke at $40 a pop either...

A waste of $40 and a great way to give a little more of your hunting locations away.

Scores are important as a tool to measure long-term health and growth of the different species. Yet because it is a objective score, it has been "hijacked" in a way that does not do the original intentions justice. They were never to be a way to determine a better hunter or to even say which hunt or trophy is more worthy of mention. As a scientific tool the scores are beneficial to track historically found and harvested animals.

I measure and being in Missoula I visit the HQ often to help. I always ask about the story behind the animal I am scoring. To me that is just as/if not more valuable than the score that I will write down.

I would encourage you to submit the elk. I believe that includes a year membership. The Fair Chase magazine would be worth that.

I also prefer to shoot an animal with "character' that will probably not score well in B&C.

That's what they all say - until they kill one.

$500 in licenses
$700 in fuel
$150 in beer
and only $80 for ego satisfaction...

I would suggest becoming a B&C member, even if you don't shoot big animals. No group takes on some of the sticky issues of hunting better than B&C. When I get Fair Chase magazine, I read it cover to cover.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, my cost for entering B&C animals could be paid for by tipping the couch upside down and using the spare change that rattles across the floor.

Need an AARP for wildlife as I find it more impressive when find a way to outwit the very mature bull, buck, billy or ram. Horn Porn is the source of lots of problems as creates a Gold Fever that attracts those with the least ethics trying to bag the most inches of rack. The WA elk hunt that was recently in court is an embarrassment as is the ID deer poached and displayed at the SLC hunt expo as was the WY buck poached and displayed at the SLC hunt expo. Naming critters that a dream team of outfitters, guides and 4th cousins once removed help target, track, sit on and point out to the sniper, er mighty hunter, that shows up opening morning is a long way from how Fred Bear hunted. B&C and P&Y and the Slams seem more focused on measurements than bonding with the outdoors. Maybe when your Board is mostly 1%ers the focus is more on private land and auction tag hunts. Is legal so to each his or her own. Not my cup of tea. Might be yours. keeps it interesting for all of us.

The amount of beer you drank was the most impressive thing. The rest was just a good time.

Interesting rant. Care to cite examples of how B&C is more focused on measurements than "bonding with the outdoors" .. just curious. It's one of the best hunting organizations out there in my opinion.

Have a question for you; what can be done about an official B&C scorer, who must be interested in getting as many "book" heads entered with him as scorer? This clown is over scoring antelope and mule deer I have personally scored by enough inches to net book them "all time". I watched him rescore a mule deer buck after it missed by 1/8 and got it over by 2/8 second time around. My score was 187 net on this buck and I know how to score.

And almost everyone puts their antelope in the freezer or monkeys with them during 60 day drying period. We had one clown bring his elk into our local contest at Sportsman's Whse with a board stuck between the beams! He had it scored later and got into 3 yr book by less than an inch. This kind of crap makes record books meaningless to me. I have no issue with those that enter their trophies, but I don't have that desire.

As long as there are people there will be lots of unethical types in all forms of human endeavour. The best I can do is not become like them. Its like the old time railroad conductors used to say,"We'd have a damn fine train if we didn't have to put up with passengers." The same could be said for religions too, but every once in a while a Mother Theresa comes along, and she gave many of us an opportunity to take stock. FWIW. GJ

Who is it? Maybe there should be an (*) by his name for everything he's measured. :) Our local guy (Fred King) is terrific. He puts on a detailed tutorial on how/why of each measurement, and is known for his precision but no gifting of measurements. He's a great representative for B&C.

I agree, Fred King is terrific.

If you have the animal measured, certainly pay the fee.

I am a see animal and shoot animal. I have shot a few nice animals, but not B & C. If it ever happens, you bet I am to have him listed. Not a big concern.
