Every time I see wilderness pictures, like those being posted in the wilderness thread Randy started, I can't help but think about who may have been in those same areas throughout the ages and wonder what the tools and weapons they used looked like.
I guess it all appeals to my love of anything historical. My wife says I am "the guy" that reads all the info placards in any museum I've ever visited. I guess I am. Which is why my favorite hobby, outside of hunting and fishing, is mine and dads collection of artifacts from the Native American hunters of the past. We have been collecting for years. Dad started when he was a teen. I started as soon as he could get me out walking the fields, creek beds, and river banks. About 99% of our collection is personal finds with only a few being purchased.
The two pictures in the middle are of a projectile made from an antler tip. It was a personal find from a Fort Ancient culture site I use to hunt frequently. The Fort Ancient culture was around from around 1000 AD to 1700AD. It was polished sharp, drilled in the bottom and most likely attached to a shaft. I can't imagine that it was used by the hunter for more than small game. It isn't particularly worth very much, but it remains my favorite artifact. I like the bone and antler artifacts of my collection more than the stone artifacts. I guess the fact that it is something tangible and made from the animals that they harvested that makes the connection for me.
Anyone else collect anything? Stamps, coins, antiques?
