Wouldn't it be far cheaper to maintain rail lines through the deserts of Kazakhstan or is it a volume thing

If it was better than shipping by sea...it would already be a done deal. China and Russia, while not always best of friends, they get along well enough to build this if it was a big savings.

It is hard for me to fathom that it would ultimately be more efficient, According to a wiki article Russian and china was planning on moving 60 million tons by 2010, Did not do a deep search to see what the actual figures are today. the other thing I wonder about direct rail with China , versus sea voyages that places the ship within grasp of Turkey via the Bosporus or going on into St Petersburg going past NATO members that ring the Baltic.

US doing its part to keep Europe in LNG.

Environmentalist doing their part to stop it.

"However, environmentalists have been quick to protest the increase in LNG exports, with a coalition of more than a hundred organizations calling on banks to stop financing LNG export terminal projects. Environmentalist protests, according to a Reuters report, have led to the shelving of an interagency review on ways to boost LNG exports to Europe."

I wonder where Bernie Sanders and his band of Socialists are hiding during this Russian invasion ?? Perhaps he thinks this may not be the time for his rhetoric regarding the pros of Socialism and how great he thought The Russian ideals were when he honeymooned over there.
Of course Russia no longer a socialist/communist country. It is a kleptocracy.

I believe that was China's ultimate goal in all this. Putin was played by China.
Test American resolve? Probably. Distract us from their ambitions in Asia? Possibly. To convince the world to accept an artificially managed, non-floated currency as a reserve currency? They aren’t that dumb to think that is a plan.

If they want to be reserve currency they need to float the Yuan. But of course that is a dangerous play as they would be exposed to the much more powerful financial structure of the west. It would also raise the cost of Chinese goods and reduce the flow of exports they need to keep their huge population employed.

It is cheaper to ship a full cargo ship from China to LA than it is to then move those same goods from LA to Phoenix by train.
Not true today. Bidding wars on containers have been going on since Q2 of 2021. Contract containers averaged $1800-2500 At that time. Containers we’re going for $8-16k all of last year. I had force majeure used on me twice. Then if you get your goods stateside crap shoot depending on port if it gets unloaded. Finally have fun finding a truck to haul it.

Doesn’t change my point at all - I am talking about cost of transportation not cost of containers. Under normal circumstances ocean/mile is dramatically cheaper than any other form of high volume transport.

Dangerous play or desperate play? Maybe things aren't so good in China right now?

Floating the Yuan would sink his ship - and he knows it. The rest of the world has been pushing this for two decades and they have done everything conceivable to resist - yet somehow Putin invades Ukraine and everybody thinks this is the new goal.

Fairly bland discussion. Didn't gain any insight from it.

Perhaps I am a bad source. Maybe it was only interesting when overlayed over a bunch of other stuff. If you were looking for a silver bullet when trying to under stand these situations, you will never find it, there is never transparency.
