Ukraine / Russia

Remember when this thread was a great discussion about what's going on with Russia and Ukraine, not partisan squabbling about who said what?

Ya, good times. Those were the days.

That's just my sarcastic self trying to keep the train on the rails. I've enjoyed the discussion in this thread, I'd hate to see it locked down.

I think that the discussion has been civil. Reporting, and what politicians/pundit are saying that could escalate our involvement in this fiasco is very relevant.

Saw this video transcribed and captioned and thought it was interesting.:

Found it to be fascinating. Putin argues that the west's only goal is the "destruction of Russia", and as Putin kills and/or disappears dissenters, he argues that this "self-purification of society is necessary."

It's clear that things aren't going well for the guy.

That is terrifying.

The headline is misleading (go figure), the bigger discussion within centers around sanctions, their effectiveness, and whether the US should consider anything above it's own Prosperity.
It's a complicated world, and everyone seems to be flexing their muscles right now. I keep hearing a lot of concern about the dollars place as the world default currency and what a benefit it is for American prosperity.

If we ever lose that luxury, Lord help us

It did work for a lot of authoritarian leaders for a long time/ still does.

I have intuition that it would be harder nowadays in the age of information. Then again, maybe not. China, in it's dystopian information control, is as strong as ever.

It's hard to tell what is cultural, doesn't have context, etc. But it is hard to square that guy and the transcription with someone who is gonna budge an inch.

You do know that is a Tucker talking point, don't you?😉
I agree, I think this is a big concern for a lot of Americans (and should be) and one of Tucker's concerns as well. Why do you guys care so much about one man's opinion? If you don't like his take, move on. We could pick someone else to bash on the other side of the spectrum but what's the point? No one is right 100% of the time, including everyone here. Who cares?

This is a pretty interesting read.

"GAZETTE: Should we expect that things will play out very differently today than they would have perhaps 25-30 years ago because of the existence of the Internet and social media?

CHENOWETH: Social media really complicates this because it does put all the cards in the hands of whoever dominates social media, which, at this point, is the Russian government in Russia..."

Added another excerpt:

"GAZETTE: Are street-level protests still an effective means of political or civil resistance?

CHENOWETH: Collective protest is extremely restricted in Russia, and public opposition to the war is illegal. Using the words “war,” “invasion,” and I think “occupation” in the course of reporting about protests is also illegal."

Quick route to discouraging a form of free speech. Make it a criminal act. What a challenge. One reason I believe U.S. was able to break free to have such an amazing Bill of Rights... The Atlantic ocean. God bless America!

There are always people who make themselves a lightning rod/spokesperson for a set of positions and it is simple to point to them as a placeholder for the whole group - think of AOC, Trump, Warren, Koch Bros. etc. I doubt folks really care about Tucker or AOC as much as they care about the hundreds of thousands who share those views and the spokesperson's role in growing the size of that "unpreferred" group.

I think the tucker trigger is set at about 1 lb around here. This should raise it to about 2 lbs.
