Ukraine / Russia

See! NYT is reporting that China does have a conscious. 😉

"The war in Ukraine evidently surprised Chinese officials, at least in its scope. “They did not anticipate a full-scale invasion,” said Yun Sun, director of the China program at the Stimson Center, a think tank. That helps explain why China has edged away from Russia over the past two weeks, as my colleagues Chris Buckley and Steven Lee Myers write:

It has softened its tone, expressing grief over civilian casualties. It has cast itself as an impartial party, calling for peace talks and for the war to stop as soon as possible."

Not really political as far as Trump-Biden, but has anyone noticed how visible Tulsi Gabbard is now? Seems to be everywhere; CPAC, Fox. She is a younger Dem that I thought showed promise. Maybe her buddy Joe Rogan can turn her around on 2A. And she knows zero about health care financing. Still, better than most. At least she isn't crazy.

It would be interesting (in a different thread) to get a list of up-and-coming politicians for both parties aged 35-65 with some national exposure who have worked to find some common ground nearing the middle over the last 5-6 years.

Agree. The fact that she would speak at CPAC and go on Fox makes her a pariah of her party though. Maybe she is working towards an Independent platform? Didn't hear her CPAC speech. Was it good?

It was very pro-First Amendment and inclusive. Railed against Biden/Garland censorship and misuse of FBI, NSA. I posted it for a minute, then deleted as maybe frowned upon. Easily found though.

She gave some of her thoughts on Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. More on topic than half of whats been posted here. Thanks for the temporary link.🙂

This part I feel would be the key component. I can't remember the last time I heard the word "compromise" uttered in US politics.

Her interview with Carlson left a lot to be desired. Seemed to be shooting from the hip and just repeating talking points. FWIW I'm not a fan of her.

Because compromise is weak - and we can't be weak because our neighbors cultural enemies want to destroy our way of life . . . :(

(I know this because some talking head/influencer who I don't know, doesn't care about me, has never been to where I live, and is being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to make politics into a blood sport told me so.)

And that is your prerogative. One thing I am confident in. I will never find a politician that 100% agrees with my philosophies, and will end up settling on the one that I can agree with the most.

"The threat from Russia is severely exaggerated"- Interview with the NY times Aug 2019

People are allowed to make mistakes, and bad calls, but for me Gabbard's foreign policy positions are completely untenable.
Syria
Russia

To me her positions and actions regarding those two countries and events mean I will never vote for her, I think she puts our country danger.

It's a little convenient to put that time frame on that. Basically covering the previous president's term to the present.

It goes much further back than that. I'll point to the enacting of Obamacare as a perfect example. Senator Baucus took single payer off the table before the first committee hearing as a concession to the other side. He also tried for many months to find common ground with Senator Grassley to make it a bipartisan bill. The Democrats dropped the public option in an attempt to find a few GOP votes. The framework of the bill is borrowed from the framework of the Massachustets law that Mitt Romney stewarded thru that state's legislature.

That law in the end was passed on partisan lines.

The problem goes back well before that as well. I'd put it back at least to the 90's.

Regarding Tulsi Gabbard, she is regarded by Democrats similarly to how the GOP views Liz Cheney.

"The threat from Russia is severely exaggerated"-

I can't speak to her range of opinions and have no particular view on her as a candidate, but the particular quote was shared by some very talented folks in the foreign intelligence community. What Putin will or won't do was subject to legitimate debate over the last 5 years.
