What the French did made a difference. I can see where he's coming from, though. Our involvement in distant wars, other than kicking Saddam out of Kuwait, have resulted in lost blood and treasure and accomplished zilch.
Spanish American War? Mexican American War? WW1? WW2? Korea? Pre-1965 they worked out pretty well.

But, to your point more recent interventions have been quagmires. But there is a difference between sending passive aid like we are now, and actually putting boots on the ground.
