Thoughts on this bailout and “stimulus”?

...brutal simplification
Dear .gov, hate to ask but we're running a little short on bonus dough, could you spare 50, with a capital B? And please keep those villagers with the pitchforks in their huts again.

Yours truly,
Airline execs and buyback shareholders

Fun fact, last year I found a coding error on the IRS free fillable forms, because I submitted day one. Had a fun email exchange with the head of IT.

This year I found a incorrect line reference on COs form.

So yeah... got all the girls in college.

So you went to Adams College. How are Gilbert, Lewis, Booger, Takashi, Wormser, and Lamar doing?

So here's a new point of view. I'm 22, just about to finish college, and working a full time job. Who are the people working a full time job making minimum wage? I don't know anyone whose making minimum wage. The labor force is at a point now where you couldn't find a job at minimum wage around here due to the shortage of workers. IF someone had a minimum wage job I would say "Hey why don't you apply here? They're hiring at 14$/hr with no experience? Maybe you don't like the work as much but if you're struggling that hard then it's worth it.

Being 22 with lots of expenses including student loans, monthly rent, truck payment, phone, internet, utilities, insurance, etc. I've still managed to save enough money to get by 2 months without working. Granted my monthly expenses are much less than someone mentioned above. People should have money saved as a just in case. What if your car breaks down and it's going to cost 2k to get it fixed? What happens then? I have money saved as an emergency fund, in case I get sick and can't work for 2 weeks again. Thankfully my truck is almost payed off now which will reduce my monthly expenses.

Maybe it's just being in the construction industry that I see ample jobs for everyone. Right this second if 20 of you came here and asked me for a job, you would be employed at above $14/hr with enough work to do 90 hours a week if you wanted. There is at least 10 other companies like the one I work for that would do the same thing in a heartbeat.

All the more reason to teach trades in High School. Learn a trade and you can work in any state.

As far as the "free" money goes, I don't need it. But I'm not going to turn it down. I'll just put it towards some loans. Definitely not giving it away since I'm gonna be paying for it anyway.

Right on!! Great post and you are on the right track. I also do construction and skilled and unskilled labor is hard to find.
I work 70 plus hours a week in spring-fall, live in a tent while working away from home, cook my own meals 90% of the time. We built a small cabin (600 sq/ft) we have lived in for five years and have been working on a add-on remodel, to be sold. We do it on a cash basis and only have one vehicle loan, my other truck has 337,000 miles on it.
I don’t want to hear this bs of no middle class, no fair wages, etc.
Most people in America are highly indebt, because they have to have a 2500 sq/ft home, new vehicles, one needs to be jacked up diesel, have 3 or 4 credit cards, boob jobs, Sitka hunting gear, etc!
I don’t agree with any bailout, Ag, airlines, oil, or$1000 to people under 75k.

How is it fair to take money from one person and give to someone else? That is where the church or non-profit should come into help. But the problem is they are so indebt also. People need to grow up at some point, and work, save, and give to those that need some help. Sorry for the rant, but this really pisses me off. Harry Dent was saying this was a failed system in 2006.

Are the numbers 1,000 per adult and 500 per child?
Still not final but most recent proposal is $1,200 per adult + $500 per kid for folks under $75k taxable income ($150k for joint filers). Amount reduced by 5% of income over the $75k/$150k ceiling for those over $75k/$150k.

I can always use some more ammo or guns to hunt with... Send me the money. LOL
Maybe... I went and picked up a rifle I had some work done to today and my local shop was completely out of 9mm and 40 ammo and only had a couple of guns left in those calibers. Said by the questions they had been getting there have been quite a few first time gun buyers. I’m all for the PR dollars, but it’s scary as hell considering the way those same people are acting about some tp! 🤔

I didn’t read the 200+ replies.

What I’m seeing as snapshot of the economy as a commercial banker, this country needs to act fast. Estimated unemployment report next week is 1.5 million unemployment claims. A new record beating 675k easily. Businesses are shutting down, hourly are unemployed. Some businesses will not weather a shutdown. Businesses that can’t make money, don’t pay rent. The lockdowns will result in Home and commercial real estate values dropping.

What do I think about the stimulus? DO MORE. None of this matters if we’re fighting our way out of a recession deeper than 2008. Mortgage payment suspensions, payroll relief for businesses, anything to provide cash flow relief to business and people. We can worry about how the government pays it back latter.

Daughter started at the new Rivian plant here just over a month ago. Just now texted me that they were shut down. May get a few weeks cleaning and disinfecting but that's about it until things shake out. May have a new dishwasher before long... I work at a Cat plant and even with over 25 years seniority I'm getting caught up in rolling temporary layoffs. Was set for next week off but last minute repair jobs saved me for now. D11s are my babies to fix and I have several all of a sudden. Better than nothing.

The older I get the more I realize my good financial position has less to do with my own acumen, and more to do with the knowledge given to me at an early age by my parents - which was pure good luck.

In grad school 2008-2010 I worked 2 PT jobs @ $7.75/hr and took 20 credits a semester on a budget of $550 per month. Summers I worked 75 hours/wk and 90% of take home went to tuition. I didn’t hunt for 3 years. But I after I graduated I wasn’t saddled with debt and I quickly got on track with down payment for a house and saving for retirement.

What were my classmates doing? Many bought new cars with student loan $ and when they accepted their diploma had $120,000 in debt, and little clue how to navigate the adult world.

So today I’m ringing my hands because my classmates and millions like them in different iterations make up the electorate which will only vote for big government R or bigger government D. There’s no choice politically for the small percentage of persons who believe that nearly every hardworking American CAN survive by their own hands, because their representatives don’t win elections any more.

We’re not limited by our economics. We’re limited by our ignorance. I don’t fault people for not knowing what they don’t know. I’m not talking about single moms, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable people. A small segment of our society will always need a safety net that they themselves cannot weave. It’s tens of millions of working people who chose not to save.

A $1200 check or whatever is a rescue to drowning people but it does nothing to fix a long-term problem. I don’t have a clue what the answer is - I just have worries that the bailouts erode any hope of a longer term solution because they take away the sting of personal need and failure which can serve as crucial motivators to re-evaluate your lifestyle and decisions.
