After a frustrating Saturday in which we couldn't get any birds to respond and barely heard any on the roost, we decided to give this afternoon a try. It was the first afternoon that you could hunt in Ohio. The first two weeks are until noon only and the last two weeks are all day. My wife is a teacher, so most of her turkey hunting is done in the afternoons. She hasn't had the best of luck, missing one last season and wounding one the previous year that got into a bunch of thick brush and we didn't recover.
I had plans on hunting a blind that dad and I had set up in an area the turkeys use pretty heavily for feeding and roosting. We had to walk through a field on our way to the blind that usually has turkeys in it. I have killed several in it over the years. We made our way out to the edge of the field slowly and quietly. I peaked over a slight rise in the field and saw several turkeys around 100 yards away. Luckily, they didn't see me. We ducked back into the thicket and followed a old logging road that it looked like they were heading toward. We got about 40 yards from where the road came out into the field and got setup. I got her pointed in the right direction, got her safety flicked off and mouthed two yelps on the diaphragm. This guy just happened to be up front. I'm very proud to have a wife that loves to hunt. It has been a great season for us her in Ohio. 5 shots, 5 birds between my father, wife and I. I asked her is she wanted her second tag, but she passed saying she would rather not shoot another bird, and preserve one for next year since we have plenty in the freezer.
About all Saturday morning was good for
