I’m sure mutually assured destruction had nothing to do with it.
From military engagement for sure, it was a recognized eastern bloc country.

To clarify my statement because of Suez we didn't have as strong a 'moral outrage' position as we do now.

That being said Nixon gave a ton of money to Austria to deal with the refugees and opened up our immigration pathways, similar to Biden now, for Hungarians.

Painting in the Nixon Library, done by a Hungarian refugee about the event.

I find it interesting that Nixon, Reagan, and Bush I would definitely be called Rinos today because of their positions on Guns, Foreign Policy (Environmental issues for Nixon) etc.

These three presidents absolutely destroyed in their elections Nixon (520) Reagan (525) Bush (426) electoral votes.

Folks may disagree, but I think this shows how much the Republican party has moved right in the last few decades.

Of course they have, since everyone to the right of Bernie is now considered “Far Right”.

Curious if you think the left has moved?

Certainly the Dems have a far left wing that moves them.

They have moved a lot on some social issues, take gay marriage. Though one could argue the middle has moved, so are they staying with the current majority or moving left of the previous one. I'd accept either belief. I do think the dems have tended to follow the current civil rights milieu at least post WWII.

Seems like main stream dems and the old republicans are still full bore Marshall plan as far as foreign relations. That's where McConnell and Biden see eye to eye. So there I'd say they haven't moved.

Guns, I think they are in the exact same spot they were in the 1950s or earlier, that's a whole can of worms that I've blathered on about on other threads.

Economy and Immigration... I think they've moved left. Certainly from Clinton era positions.

I think center party leadership of both R and D have moved the same but wings of their party have moved a lot. Difference being an AOC or Bernie aren't the democratic candidate for president.

I think Biden is closer to a McConnell in terms of positions v. party at large.

Prolly not far off Will...one thing I don't understand is the chart's tumescent branding of 'flag & faith'.

In 38 pages, a thread is going to wander a bit.

If someone truly thinks Bernie Sanders is the edge of being far right...well that says quite a bit about them.

I think that there has been a sorting out occurring in both parties for a good long while. There used to be conservative democrats and liberal republicans. Think, the southern white democrats, and New England republicans. They each switched parties.

So previously there was more diversity in each party, now there is much less. It was only a few weeks ago that Trump warned donors to Haley's campaign that they would be blackballed from the MAGA camp. That is further evidence of the intolerance that is prevalent.

Much of that I agree with but immigration. As recently as Obama, I posted the video in this thread, he was much more like the R’s of today. The immigration issue has quickly moved way left. By todays standards Obama would be a far right racist on immigration.

I’d agree with all that except the last paragraph includes both parties controlling their ranks and getting put “on notice” if they step out of line.

Bernie is a independent (socialist) that caucuses and/has run as a Dem. I'm was saying his ideological distance from Biden is similar to McConnell's distance from Trump.

Maybe that's horse pucky... 🤷‍♂️

I mean Jesus was definitely a socialist and a card carrying member of the carpenters local ;)

Unfortunately the Far Right I see locally is on the far right edge of page 2.
