Caribou Gear Tarp

"The Big Three", I have a few questions for you!

I drew my goat tag a couple years ago. I happened to draw two other low odds tags the same year but my main focus was the goat. I spent a few weeks scouting, all summer conditioning, (long hikes with a 60lb compressor in my backpack in the high country). I gave it every ounce of dedication I had to do it right. Took tons of pictures, both before and during the hunt. Two days before the hunt I injured my knee but decided to tough it out and just go in light. I ended up taking my goat the 2nd day but covered just over 30 miles on foot in those two days, 7.5 of which were with a full size skin and head and all the meat boned out and gear.(close to 120lbs) The injury definitely played games with my head, I was broken and defeated by the time I killed. The out was horrible and left me questioning my own sanity, but I felt grateful to have had success. Since then the trauma has wore off and probably sits as the pinnacle of my hunting expeditions so far. I'm am still hopeful that I get a crack at the other two, I expect them to be equally difficult and stressful but a once in a lifetime opportunity. I hope to be successful but more importantly to enjoy every minute of the hunt and not get hung up on the success but rather the experience...

Sneakem,,,, Sometimes a hunter just has to suck-it-up! Sounds like you did just that, congrats! I feel that goat hunters should be in as good of shape as possible but mental toughness is every bit as important if not more. Hiking into goat country with an injured knee tells me that you have the metal aspect well in hand. Congrats on a beautiful goat! From the photo, it looks damn steep! Usually those critters roll like a ball, all the way to the bottom.. Thanks for the post and the beautiful photos. I hope that you get a chance at a sheep or moose in the near future.

PS: I feel your pain with packing goat and gear in one load. You should try it in knee to waist deep snow, that is all sorts of fun!
