What’s her story? Look at the pictures closely. She must have lived quite the life. I killed her off the Palouse River in WA. I didn’t call her in. I know the spot well, and killed her still hunting in the rolling sage brush. Her hide is beautiful and the rest of her was healthy and big. 0C529229-8B43-4602-A7B4-22F82D9546DE.jpeg16DFDF2F-9A89-4AEC-978C-884935306AD3.jpeg014F55B5-E862-4A12-8AB9-5AEAD65C53BE.jpeg114C5F46-9817-47CE-81B7-B1F82C39C7A7.jpegA2C97783-F81A-4E6A-BE37-C4E368710973.jpeg434A4A48-BFF6-416C-9F23-6E1473305D15.jpeg

Shot one with my bow once that would have been the Safari Club world record. Still have the skull somewhere.

Shot through the front of the teeth and out the head with a .22 ? Not sure how that would be possible I guess . Hmm . Old looking yote otherwise !

Do they send them back? She’s a trophy. I’ve never had one aged.
I have read here that they will send an elk ivory back because they only use a sliver of the root. That old girl's skull would look just fine with a missing tooth though.

Bone growth over an avulsed or extracted tooth takes many months. They weren't lost close to your encounter with her.

And I wonder if the hole in the temporal bone is showing signs of healing? I'd wager that the hole was larger and the body is trying to close it backup.

Fragments of root/enamel that got shoved underneath the hard palate soft tissue and reattached? (black circles)

What is that dark thread material? Integrated in the bone or just sitting on the bone surface?

I'd guess the "thread" is probably fur. She definitely had some significant head trauma.

My Lab Ellie's predecessor Black Pearl, was run over at 11 months and sustained a fractured skull. She survived it fine with a crease in her skull above both eyes. That dog was amazing. Survived rattlesnake bite and still the only dog they've seen at U of Minnesota vet school hospital to recover 100% from glioma brain cancer. In 22 years only three other dogs survived but with significant permanent damage. When I took her down there she couldn't stand up to poop. "Take her home and let her die." She had other plans it seems.
