Tariffs and Potential Inflation

What is your best estimate on when the Kemmerer plant will be generating electricity?
As I understand the project to date, the operators have submitted their permitting application (Spring 2024). Best guess is that the NRC will be able to rule on the construction permit in late 2026 time frame. If approved, I am guessing a 3-4 yr construction period so late 2029 or early 2030 (just my WAG). Checkout and commissioning may take another year. So real power generation may be 2031 or 2032 at the earliest. Again, just my guess and likely on the optimistic side at that. But, this is the first liquid metal cooled reactor in the US for a long time (Expt'al Breeder Reactor at INL is that last that I can recall and it was operated from the mid-60's through the mid-90's) so the safety analyses and safety reports may take longer than current water-cooled designs that are operated today as the hazards (and mitigations) are very different. Disposal of radioactive liquid metal coolant is a huge issue and that will have to be addressed as part of the NEPA reviews before permitting is approved. And there is also a public comment period baked into that timeline that could get really dragged out if there is enough public resistance generated.

The majority (78%) of respondents to the latest CNBC Supply Chain Survey say shipping clients requested to pull forward freight in anticipation of both the increased tariff threat and the potential strike.

You left something out.

You will also note that they are buying time to setup production elsewhere

U.S.-based companies are also switching to non-Chinese suppliers and manufacturing operations in Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Malaysia, Kenya, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Taiwan, and Turkey.

I don't care how cheap the crap China wants to dump on us gets. If it is made in China, I'm not buying.
You're typing on some form of technology. Somewhere along the line; your computer, phone, router, cable, parts inside, etc., something is made in China.

Just the way it is.

Most things are not going to be made in the USA in grand scale. Companies are going to use the other counties as mentioned above.
It's just polishing a turd.

Looks better because it's not made in China. Still same quality crap inside the package.

The green energy segment was more of interest to me. They guy behind Bessents left shoulder was entertaining as well!
Bessent’s answers were about as I would expect from someone applying for that job. Lots of academic theory and a sprinkle of appeasement for the Repubs. I think he has the hardest job of anyone in the admin. He had to explain economics to a boss that has zero interest and zero understanding. The only part that was an obvious disconnect was the comments on backing a strong dollar. Jobs don’t get brought back to US if you increase the cost.

FWIW, my base electrical rate jumped 17% last year with another approval for an increase in 2025. It easily pushed my breakeven on solar to about 15yrs with conservative estimates. And yes, American made panels. All in return over the estimated life was 5-6%. If I bake in projections for increases for overall electricity demand and honest rate increases, it was a no-brainer.

The challenge I have with solar panels:
A bit off topic, though for chits since it's discussed here.
The rate of technological advancement in this field is astounding! The garbage that has yet to figure how to extract recyclable resources has turning into flat out mass landfill additions! I understand one's garbage is another's gold however, as it stands, the price for landfill vs recycling is soooo far out of wack it's in excess of 10x's!

People can roll with it or make a concerted effort, as in self empowered awareness, to minimize the purchase of products made in China.
You are correct in the sense China dominates the WORLD with their mineral ownership, not only on Chinese land though in Brazil, Australia, etc where Chinese State owned dominance of private companies is mind boggeling.

If people can not comprehend the trade war to protect American interests, as declared by Trump I, Janet Yellin and the Biden Administration, and into Trump II... And simply play naive to the impact of a trade war, prices will go up. Amazing in a time of extreme D and R, we have Bi-Partisan action against China! Haha!

Beats the hell out of war with boots on the ground!!!!!!!!! for minerals. If a nut job doesn't think that is possible, Oil sure played a factor in many American soldier lives.

What company is that? If they are a smart company, they decided not to expand because of a current world solar panel glut right now.

Helienne. Should be able to Google it and find mention of their decision being based on concerns with threats made by the incoming administration.

My understanding is that there are Chinese panels available but quality concerns exist with them....I know someone who's been waiting months for the good panels he ordered to come in.
