Just got home for a 8 mile hike/scout of some Roosevelt country That we had targeted for scouting and research for last season and just never made it there got to it today and put some more of the land puzzle together saw some elk sign , along with seeing a bobcat and a coyote on the trek . I’m sure during the upcoming archery season will get in there at some point

my friend John walking out of the timber and into a clear cut, we saw Lots of blacktail buck rubs from last season all around the last 100 yards of road leading into the cut, had me thinking twice about the long hike to get in there and hunt that edge of the cut for a buck this year

headed to the next area we found an old generational elk trail through bigger timber , we followed it since we had to cut across to the next road system, farther in the elk trail passed some serious moss covered trees and brush , I took a few pics

When we got home , shot the bows for about 40 min , it’s was a great day all around

Here’s an over view of what we were walking into , I put an X about where I was standing when I took the pic , And for Blacktail hunting a lot of times you’ll find those black tails within 20 to 30 yards on the edge of these clearcuts feeding , where if you spook then they’ll run right back in to that timber real quick and disappear, A lot of times I like to get the feel or the lay of the land for a clear-cut and kind of pick out where I want to try to enter the clear-cut from because sometimes there’s multiple roads into one or see the different high points to where I can glass the edges from and kind of come up with a game plan before season starts , if I end up in that area hunting at some point during the day

We ran into these 4 random Porta potties driving between Trailheads elk hunting. When you have been in the mountains for a few days a comfortable spot is welcomed, even if it’s not the cleanest.
