We will be heading to CO in September for my elk hunt. Me and my wife are flying out but my Dad and Mom will leave the day before us and drive. They will have to stop and sleep somewhere in KS. Looking at booking them a room right off I70 in Hays. The only concern I have is my gear that will be on a roof rack and a hitch hauler. It will be my big cooler, propane tank and my tubs with clothes and camping gear. Would you feel safe leaving this stuff strapped on overnight in a hotel parking lot or should I get them to bring it all in the room? I hate for them to have to do that if it’s unnecessary. I know stuff can get stolen anywhere but was wondering if anyone had stayed near there before and your thoughts.

You're right, it can happen any time and in any place. I've stayed in Hays a few times on hunting trips and never had any issues. Just don't make it easy on anyone who wants a five finger discount, locks, straps and so on. The real valuable stuff I'd take inside, guns and optics. But coolers and propane tanks are easy to replace.

It's been years since I stayed anywhere out there, but I would be prepared to bring in anything valuable or essential - and get a ground level room. The people in Hays and the surrounding areas are good people, but like most midwest states, have their share of meth heads looking for easy money.

I live out here. Hays has pretty low crime. But you’re also going to have to remember that you’re right off of I 70 and there is God only knows what traveling down that at any given moment. I would take it in but that’s just me. During hunting season Hays is a popular stop for people making the trip out so it’s pretty common to see truck beds loaded down with coolers and miscellaneous gear.
I don’t know what dates you’re looking at but there are a few Airbnb’s in Victoria 10 miles east of Hays.

This or they can stop in Russell 30 miles East. Much smaller town and a nice motel just off the Interstate. I had a friend living in Hays who would let them use her garage and transport them but she has recently moved to Charleston, SC. She was my last Hays connection.

Hays seemed like a decent little town while I was there. I would still take anything easily stolen and valuable into the room

Have hear some horror stories but (knock on wood) we've never had any in dozens of travel hunting and fishing trips.
We never leave guns or our cash overnight in the rig, but there would still be plenty of gear to snatch. Always try to park right under floodlights a close to motel front entry as possible.
