State may limit elk claims

CHAMA, N.M. (AP) - A proposal would prohibit ranchers from filing elk-damage claims if they want to continue getting free, elk hunting permits from the state.

The proposal also aims to weed out ranchers who provide little or no benefits to elk but get permits anyway.

The state Department of Game and Fish unveiled the plan during a state Game Commission meeting Thursday in Chama.

Commission members have not set a timeline for voting on the proposal. The department will seek comment on the proposal in coming months.

This is a step in the right direction. This needs to come about then the Jenning bill needs to be killed.
