Solo Hunters: Keeping Entertained at Camp Solo Hunting?

Got a doe muzzleloader tag this year. I am going solo and have done it before especially when going after grouse and my elk hunt last year. I am base camp hunting and still manage to get extremally bored when I am in camp. This will be my longest camp alone, its ten days (Unless I tag out earlier). This got me thinking and I thought it would be an interesting topic. How do you solo hunters keep your mind busy and entertained when at camp all alone?

I subscribe to Audible on my phone. I downloaded over 200 hours of books. It helped kill time while stuck in camp during the almost constant rain during last month's archery cow hunt. I also have a Kindle with about 30 books downloaded.

I always switch my focus to fishing, and in the evening, a good book. I do hunt alone these days, as my hunting partners have passed away. Naps midday with no interruptions flat out rock!

Stare at a fire and drink Jim Beam. Or, read a book. Crossword puzzles are good. But, I’m also not above playing chess vs a computer on my phone in camp.

I have never been bored out in the wild and have hunted solo most of my life. I usually am hunting til dark and up way before 1st light.
I might read maps or play with the GPS after dinner. Plan the next option.
I might take a nap or just fall asleep after lunch. Usually in the shade in a watching spot.

Look at OnX maps. Think about what is working and what isn’t to get on animals. Planning the next day out. Also just enjoying the quiet, wild place - soak it all in.

When hunting solo, by the time I get back to base camp I’m so thoroughly exhausted that all I do is make a quick meal and then right to the cot. I’ve never had the time or energy left to feel bored.

I just hunt. Or wander. Usually see a mountain and think I better get to the top. I don’t spend much time at camp other than sleeping.

Tired like old dog by time get back to camp. Hot food, hydrate, pee, food, hydrate pee, pee. Did I mention like old dog? Sleep or more like coma til ^#€&@$ alarm goes off.

My Colorado solo hunts were great. Listening to good books during the drive, embracing the solitude, and hiking gorgeous country with a rifle. Seem to be able to recall every detail of those trips with no distraction.

If I am truck camping, I take an old transistor radio my Grandfather had. It's amazing the stuff you can pick up on AM late at night. mtmuley
