Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

Savage has discontinued all previous Axis and Axis II models

Just a quick note for those who might want a new one before they're gone. The Axis name is being kept, but all new models will carry the new stock design.
Is the new stock any better than the old stock?

Let's face it. When I'm looking for a Savage Axis, what I'm really looking for is an inexpensive action that I'm going to rebarrel and change the stock.

I looked at one in left hand .30-06 a few days ago, but the tag said APEX and not AXIS. The price tag said $600. Maybe a year ago when I looked at one the price was $380 or thereabouts.

Anything should be an improvement on the old ones. Popping that off and bedding in a Boyd’s stock is the ticket to a bargain shooter. Wish they still chambered them in .280AI so I wouldn’t have to swap a barrel.

I think the Apex is a 110 with a low end stock. Different model than the Axis.

It certainly wasn't priced low end compared to the Axis models. The Apex includes a Vortex scope [wasn't one on the gun I saw] whereas the Axis includes a Weaver scope.

Two of my buddies bought those Apex packages. They’re fine, really. Wish I could’ve directed them to spend a few extra bucks on a blued Tikka or gone in the other direction with a naked Axis II and upgraded the scope.
