The official 2025 Wyoming elk hunt for Dave N thread.

Little bit of wind today but straight out of the west giving me a headwind. Time for some shooting! Found out that my rifle doesn't like the reloads I was sent. Couldn't group them and I was all over the map. Needless to say I was kind of confused. I had let the barrel cool down between rounds while I ran out to check targets in case that was having an impact. Just about to hang it up and decided to grab 3 of the Sig Saur loads that I had. Sent them down and what do you know things were normal. Hmm. Guess I'll be sticking with these for the hunt.
Here's my 200 yard target. The 6 high and right were the reloads and the 3 just above the bull are the Sigs.

The factory ammo is knocking on 1 MOA. Should be plenty good to kill an elk.

Fairly decent out today so once again I pulled out my rifle for a quick round of practice. I had cleaned up my 100 and 300 yard backstops and focused on the 200. Now I'm going to pull that one and get everything out of the field for spring farming. Tried out a couple different positions and quickly ruled out most. Nowhere near steady enough for making a shot. I feel like I'm pretty well dialed in and about as ready as I can get. Sure would like to shoot some over the summer but that ain't happening in farm country. We'll see how early the crops get picked this fall. Rifle is consistently shooting about 1 1/2" high at 200 yards. That'll work.

@Addicting is going to drop off one of his spotters and a bino harness when he passes through to another hunt out west before mine. Still working out my clothes but should be all set there. I guess about all I'm missing at this point is a pack and probably some hiking sticks to borrow. I think @Wildabeest mentioned he had those? Lots of time left to square that away.

Lastly, I'm guessing any potential helpers are waiting for draw results before committing to our camp. I'm planning on bringing some stuff out with me and need to know how much to be able to share with everyone so as soon as you make up your mind please let me know so I can plan accordingly!

What week are you going Dave?

I believe opening day is October 15th so I'll probably be heading out the 9th or 10th to get there a few days early.
Ok, wasn't sure what the dates were in that part if the state for general. I think we are leaving about the same time otherwise I'd offer up my mystery ranch pack. Wish the timing was different.

I’ve got a 65 litre pack with meat shelf that you’re welcome to use. It’s my only large pack, so if you use it then it means I’m only packing out light loads in my day pack 😊.

I’ve got one pair of adjustable / collapsible trekking poles. Depending on how my ankle is doing and whether I’ll be able to hike into the nasty stuff will dictate whether I need to use them or not.

Ok, pack taken care of. Never used hiking sticks before but have an idea that they could help me with my balance. My knee is doing good and I'm not normally thinking ahead about watching my step anymore. I'll keep working it over the summer and I have a feeling that I will be able to get a little further into the rougher stuff than I thought earlier. I know that is fairly important. Hell, I suppose I could find a couple dead sticks laying around to help if needed. No worries if something happens to one!

I didn't wish I had the sticks until the pack was full last year for the downhill stuff. Just food for thought.
