Relax, Everything is Going to be Okay!

They indeed are in that it's an example of how well-run, well-led, .gov agencies with motivated employees can overcome workforce reductions.
I went back and read you post again. I will read more of the thread, and give it a chance.

I didn’t live you experience, so maybe my response isn’t fair to you. I appreciate the effort you and others have put in when cuts happen.

That said, at some point even motivated employees with dull tools, insufficient funding (e.g. revenue from extremely cheer stumpage, grazing, mineral /oil royalty, etc ) , and doing the job of 4, 6, 20 Others will give up.

It’s been known for years USFS, NPS, BLM, etc are lacking staff and budgets. Where is the breaking point, or are these cuts an attempt to breach that? I don’t know the answer.

This thread definitely needs more chinese.
As red and blue loyalists quibble about DOGE actions here on HT until they turn red or blue in the face, it likley scares the beejeezus out of the rest of the free world that looks on, aghast at the obvious relationships between Trump and Putin and Musk and China.

I have been watching a bit of the "meeting" between Zelensky and and Trump. It did not go well. We are losers for it. Ukraine is a loser for it. Putin has had a great day. I wish that this was all a bad dream from eating too much Chinese food.

If the world can avoid a large scale war in the next decade, it will surprise me greatly.

Someone musta told Trump and Vance that meeting was supposed to be a cameo on the set of Real Housewives. Good lord.

Sometimes I get the feeling ol Vlad realized he could never beat us in a conventional non nuclear war, but he realized he could seriously undermine us from within.

I watched Oliver Stones series of interviews with him 8 or 10 years ago and came away pretty alarmed. He's an evil SOB, but I think he's a lot smarter than a lot of our leaders, much more manipulative, and he can control his country and more importantly, the messaging within his country in a way we can't. I'm glad we have much more freedom of speech, but a lot of what's plauging us as a country comes down to rhetoric, and I think a lot of that rhetoric is being pushed by foreign actors who are delighting in watching us tear ourselves apart.

Example. Russia was always THE enemy when I was a kid. Much of what makes my community what it is is based around deterring that threat. I remember when I was really young, my dad saying things like ,"only one thing to do if the Russians nuke us son, go outside, stick your head between your legs, and kiss your ass goodbye."

Now, he's bought into the idea that Russia didn't start the Ukraine conflict. And he parrots their talking points. Just incredible to me.

Discussion heard today--USFS plans to conduct Rx Burns for both wildlife habitat and to reduce fire risk are in serious trouble due to existing cutbacks with more coming.
Local to your area? I just had a conversation yesterday with our local USFS guy regarding some juniper slash they planned to burn and he said everything was a go. He said they had to write a couple emails on the importance of certain projects and got the go ahead to continue as normal. He did say they had one project with a bunch of money tied to it for thinning that was on hold but they were expecting it to resume shortly.

Yes my part of the country..

Round two: New directive from our agency for the five bullet points.

Meh, based on the description "...exercise aligns with and supplements the intent of the Office of Personnel Management's recent guidance..."
"Provide approximately five bullet points summarizing your key accomplishments from last week."
"Send to ... and cc direct manager."

yadda, yadda, yadda...

  • I complied fully and faithfully with my oath of office. (“I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”)
  • I performed tasks and assignments to implement the laws and regulations that govern the official duties of my program and agency.
  • I performed the duties outlined and required by my job classification in my position of record.
  • I followed the law and regulations regarding confidentiality of data and information sharing with outside parties that are part of my work.
  • I performed these assignments during work hours at my duty station as outlined in my personnel records (Standard Form 50 — Notification of Personnel Action).

I work for an agency that reveled in requiring pseudo justifications for your existence every year at performance review time. We were also required to submit a weekly summary of what we did the previous week. I wrote mine out pretty much verbatim from my job description, as @Sytes did.

I would occasionally take heat from my supervisor about “not being more detailed”. My stance was don’t be a lazy supervisor and you would know what I’m doing.

Everyone likes to focus on the dearth of good employees, but possibly the larger issue is lack of good supervisors and leaders.
