Public Land Whitetails

Plenty here in PA. Your welcome to stay and hunt with me. I'm a Columbia from completing my slam and would love to see you get one more towards yours.

Big28hunter, when you say a "Columbia" is that a Columbia whitetail or Columbia blacktail. We have both near where I live. I live in the heart of Columbia whitetail and Columbia blacktail country and blacktails still have me puzzled. Toughest animal I've ever hunted.

I live in IL and have killed a bunch of whitetails and I'll tell you...don't come here! I suppose one could go hunt the Shawnee National Forest in Southern IL. It's very large, like 250K acres. Other than that spot though, there is very limited public here. Plus a buck tag is something like $411, plus a hunting license and habitat stamp.

If I were to pick a place to go public land whitetail hunting I think I'd choose SD or MT. Though WI and MN would be solid Midwest options.

And budget friendly, MN and WI non-res are OTC and <$175. There are areas in WI where you can harvest more than 1 deer as well. If you aren't afraid of the CWD management zone, you can get up to 4 antlerless tags per day. Good luck with your research.

Take a look at the thread from today on some buck photos from WI. There are some giants that came off public land!

I would try from Seeley Lake north towards Whitefish.
Whitetails thicker there than anywhere I have seen between here and the Ohio River valley.

I live in northern Idaho, Clearwater Country. I have hunted deer and elk here for over 30 years. Be glad to help you out if you are interested in some of the best deer hunting in the nation. e mail me.

Thanks, ric. I would love to hear more about hunting in Idaho. PM sent.

Actually, after thinking about it, I might suggest SE Ohio, or NW W.VA. I know from experience there are a ton of whitetails in that zone and a good amount of pubic access, The biggest buck I ever got a chance to even see was in this area. He must have been at least 250# and an very heavy wide rack.....only prob was I was just driving along the hiway and he was feeding in a cornfield beside the road.
