How picky are you on public land when chasing whitetails

Needs to be a mature buck to shoot opening weekend, I like hunting enough I am in no hurry to put one down. Hunt every day of rifle if I can and enjoy our later MZ season too.

Lots of hunters for the former, often find myself alone for MZ season.

When I first started hunting the National Forest in Southern Ohio we were not picky at all. It was a four day git it done or no venison for the year era in my life. Later on after I had private ground in SC or AL I had long seasons there in addition to the public ground hunt in Ohio I would pass up a spike or button buck.

Hunting most all public in PA in the NC part of the state, I usually take the first legal deer I see. Time is usually limited and the deer density is pretty low.

Here in NE Minnesota. It’s basically buck only. I’ll shoot a 3” unicorn buck if it were to walk by because that will have been the only deer I saw all season.
Moral of the story there is no deer so if you want meat shoot the first legal deer you see. Typically more 🐺 than any other animals running around out there.
