Pause on Federal Grants - MD25-13

I don't think its a gotcha, I just think we don't realize what exactly our tax dollars pay for and the good things they do.

IMO, that's been a failure of the US Government as a whole, all we ever hear about is the bad (and bald faced lies like 50 million in condoms).

We don't hear much, if anything, about the good things our tax dollars support. Like I already said, something as simple as the Interstate/Highways we all enjoy traveling down. If something that simple is overlooked, how do you suppose controlling noxious weeds, or managing Endangered Species, Migratory Waterfowl, Anadromous fish, fighting forest fires is viewed?

I doubt the average American knows their tax dollars support any of that.
Good news doesn't sell and at least one side of the aisle figured out long ago that creating boogeymen worked to their advantage. The hell with the truth when votes are on the line. To be fair, both sides of the aisle are guilty of this. One side is just better at it.

I absolutely think we should fund science research and do what we can to develop job candidates for the STEM fields. Relying on H1B visas is as dumb as outsourcing all our manufacturing jobs to foreign countries.
I support funding science research. No argument there. But not all of the paused grants are necessarily the purview of the USG. But more importantly, all grants should be 100% auditable so that the taxpayer, through the elected officials, can be sure those monies are being spent as intended and not siphoned off to fund pet projects or fund friends and political donors. I see no issues looking under the hood on this matter. And if there are no issues, then the work can continue. Pausing current efforts while the audit is performed is oftentimes necessary albeit painful. I have been on both sides of that coin.

H1B's are a bandaid. Not a solution. But sometimes you need a bandaid until a better fix can be arranged.
All that said, I am completely unconvinced 25% tariffs are going to bring steel manufacturing back to the US. My comment was coated in sarcasm to reflect my confidence level in this “plan”.
That is a fair opinion. Tariffs are two-edged beasts. They can incentivize organic production over imports and in some cases level the playing field for US-based production. But the business case has to close. If it can't close with a US production model, then they are counter-productive and direct and indirect industries will become more expensive to the consumer.
I’d love to see domestic production increase. I’d also love to see us train and develop cutting edge scientists.
1000%

You really have to be kidding.

Wasn’t that what GAO was for? Do we have proof they were NOT doing their job?

Will the president pay income tax this year or maybe make some donations for all those years he didn't? I do not mind if he guts the IRS so long as we can have a straight across the board tax that EVERYONE pays. Thats simple math, isn't it?

Yes - that should be the job of the GAO. Still waiting for the proof to come out. There are some early reports (which need to be closely scrutinized and vetted) that would indicate in many case that no, the GAO was not doing there job. Or they were being stonewalled by either the agency itself or congress-critters with vested/political interests. I take any claims so far with a grain of salt. But I don't have an issue with really digging in to find the truth either. I am suspicious of anyone who reacts as hysterically as many of the Dems are now to digging into each and every USG agency to verify that tax dollars are being spent as intended and that those dollars can be accounted for in an audit.

I’m sure an audit will find mistruths, misspending, misappropriation, stonewalling. And, I’m quite confident both parties have turned a blind eye to it.

As a former auditor, I've seen nothing to indicate any current "audit" is being conducted by impartial and qualified auditors utilizing appropriate standards.

Both parties definitely have. Drastic correction measures warranted for both parties. One party seems at least open to correcting. One party + Mitch McTurtle seem adamantly opposed. Time will tell

Here's the key words:

complete a major acquisition.

cut costs

$53-billion deal to acquire oil producer Hess

Chevron has said it is targeting up to $3 billion in cost cuts

And finally, here's how we do it:

lay off 15% to 20% of its global workforce

So that:

Chevron's shares are up 5.6% year-to-date.
As a shareholder I applaud the EMT for increasing value for their investors.

Reduction in workforce, voluntary seperate agreements, acquisitions, mergers, ect happen everyday in the corp world. If your name is on the list you take what you can get and move on. You do what you have to do to make yourself more marketable in the open job market. Maybe that's training, education, ect. Then you find another job.

I don't see how this is proof of anything implemented by the current administration. Looks to me to business as usual, given the current state of this industry.

The auditors using “appropriate”standards didn't detect the fraud, corruption , and waste in decades that the current auditors have found in a few days. Apparently the qualified auditors couldn’t run a simple query to find that 150 year olds are still getting SS payments. Let’s see what the unqualified guys find and then judge.

When the British are calling BS, Elon should be embarrassed his lies are getting too extreme. Not that the truth matters much.

I know National Parks are a different beast on here because we generally can’t hunt them, but the silence from pro business folks is deafening.

Congressman Simpson (R) ID is the only person to begin to speak out about how not hiring seasonal employees would affect the surrounding economies.

If you live in a gateway community or even a rural state with National Parks, they have an outsized effect on the economy. It will be interesting to see the fallout if they can’t open/operate.
