Pack out pics

Virginia wilderness whitetail getting ready to head the 4 miles out.
I've been thinking about this pic today, it brings back some memories.

Not quite 10 years ago I was in my early 20s and really wanted to hunt out of a backpack in wilderness type areas. I didn't have much discretionary income at that point, and liked making things myself. I bought some mil surplus shoulder straps and belt, a mil surplus top loading duffel, and sewed up a set of sleeves to hold some aluminum bar stock which made my pack frame. With a bunch of sewing and experimentation, it made a usable backpack. It worked fine with camp gear!

So full of youthful enthusiasm I hiked about 2 miles from my truck into a local wilderness area with my Frankenpack loaded up with gear the night of the rifle opener. I slept under a tarp that night, and about 2 pm the next day caught an old public land whitetail buck coming into a water hole and shot him at 40 yds. I was sold on this backpack hunting idea! I got busy with my knife and boned him out. I managed to cram the boned out meat, the head, and some of my gear into this monstrosity.
Let's just say the pack I had so ingeniously created became fairly dysfunctional with 90 or so lbs loaded up. The hike out in the dark was at that point probably the highest level of physical suffering I had experienced. But I still remember setting that pack on the tailgate and standing there, soaked with sweat, and looking at that knarly old rack. That night was a gateway to so many good experiences, and I will remember it for the rest of my life. I don't have any pics, but I'm sure if I did they would be quite comical.
I also found enough extra money to buy a better pack pretty quickly. All packouts since have been easier.
So thanks for posting that pic! You brought back a lot of good memories!

That buck was just an average deer I shot on day three. The buck that got away the day before in the same spot was what dreams are made of. A solid 150 inch VA deer about as good as we see around here. After I got back to camp I packed up camp and headed out. I knew the pack was heavy but didn't realize it was 80lbs until I weighed it.
Thank goodness most of the packing was downhill back to the truck. These type of adventures is what we all dream of at night and as a small child laying in bed.
My uncle opened my mind into these types of adventures listening to his stories every year after his back country Idaho elk hunts as a child. He was actually with me on the moose hunt above at age 78. We sure enjoyed ourselves.
