Haven't been on the forum in a while.

I just got back from a month long trip to Oklahoma for some fishing and rifle season. It was a great trip spending time with friends and my Daughters got to join me for Thanksgiving.

Got my personal best catfish a whopping 7 pounder. I ran a jug line for a couple weeks. Took a few days to get it figured out, but I did well enough overall we had a great meal of fish and chips for 10 people.

Opening morning I snuck up the creek and got into my blind in the dark. Surprisingly for public, I never heard another boat on the water before 930. Around 830 I had a couple doe get chased through my spot by a buck. They all came through so fast I had no shot. Stayed put and sure enough 45 mins later this buck came in following the same trail. I was ready for him. 1 round from the Ruger American 7mm-08, he was even nice enough to walk up the hill and lay down next to my blind. By far the biggest deer I've taken. Spent the next two weeks exploring Corp of Engineer land trying to get a doe or two. Wasn't able to get it done though. I wish they would open the WMA up to doe harvest.

I got the skull cleaned up and hanging while I think on the type of background I will make for it.

Five years in a row so far I've been having an absolute blast on public in Oklahoma. Heading back in February to harass the pigs. My oldest has expressed an interest in learning to hunt. Looking forward to getting her out there.

Congrats on a nice Public land buck. IMG951509.jpgI managed to make it down to Oklahoma this year and hunt with my brother. Got a heck of a good deer on public land on the first night. I had went down in March to do some pretty extensive scouting and get a feel for the public land. My brother also got out and did some more scouting during the archery season since he lives in the area. We have access to some pretty good private land for hunting but having been raised in southwest CO and growing up hunting almost exclusively on public we had a pretty big desire to get it done together the old way so to speak.

Glad to hear a about your success I know some hard work and persistence went into that buck. Such a cool way to get it done. You and your crew have a open invitation to lunch or dinner at my place I cook some mean bbq and I can pick your brain on using a kayak for hunting.

I like the idea of the brass behind the skull. I started doing something similar this year with mine, using a tag and a piece of twine so I can put the date and where I shot the animal and any other comments. We’ll see if I stick with it or take your idea. 😉
