Drew a northern AZ early archery elk tag this year. Have hunted elk before but not an expert.

Outside of the universal elk tips (wind, patience, hunt all day). Is there any specific hunting tips for AZ archery elk?

I am expecting high hunting pressure and lots of UTV traffic but wanted to know if I should prepared myself for other issues.

any tips are appreciated.

thanks,

Depends heavily on the unit. There is significantly different terrain in Northern Arizona. From large swaths of solid juniper to canyons, to lodgepole pine forests, to farm land.

It all depends on which unit you have and is it an early hunt or late hunt. If you have never elk hunted and have an AZ tag…I would suggest you get a scouting package from a reputable guide. You have a big up hill for a first elk hunt with a potentially great tag. You need to stack all the odds you can in your favor.

One of the biggest tips I have for new elk hunters is don’t forget to use your sense of smell. Elk have a very distinct odor (they stink). More times than I can count I have smelled elk before I could hear them or see them.

Good luck and have fun.

If it is more open terrain it will be spot and spot more like a rifle hunt than a traditional archery hunt. With heat, night bugling can be key to locating herds.
