New Zealand Roar Hunt 2024

I'm currently trying to plan an archery trip for stag for this coming year. Want to do a DIY hunt as I don't have the luxury to afford a guided hunt. Any recommendations and or tips? Any thing helps as this will be my first time hunting Stag or just visiting New Zealand in general.

Plenty of DOC land and in NZ you can hunt big game in National Parks.
Also it’s not too difficult to get permission on private property.

Any recommendations on general area? Not looking for coordinates just to clarify😁 The photos from this thread looks to be in some high country possibly above tree line.... As an archery hunter it would be pretty hard to pull of a hunt like that. Do stag pattern similar to elk? Bed in dark timber? Should I be scouting for food and water sources? Sit wallows in the afternoon? I'm an avid Elk hunter so I have that as a back round but I'm trying to gather more info on how to go about a hunt for stag.

I’m no expert but I would hunt the West Coast of the South Island during the roar; late March early April.

The hunt Kiwi did was on the east side of the main divide, in that vicinity a lot of the country is fairly dry as most of the rain is dumped on the west side due to the north south ranges blocking the clouds. The deer seem to adapt tho and learn to use the natural topography to their advantage, it's surprising how a bare bit of country like that can produce a fair few animals.

I’ll send you a PM soon.

Beautiful area. I absolutely need to head out there for a bow hunt. I assume it's a pain to bring a rifle in but haven't gotten that far in my research.

Next year will be Slovenia and Belize fly fishing but I think I'm going to pencil that in 2026 and grab a CO cow tag to keep the freezer in order.

Yes, it’s a pain to bring a rifle but it can be done with the right paperwork, arrangements in NZ and flights. Bow much easier.

It looks like it's not a big deal but have you had issues flying with broadheads?

Are your hunting tactics pretty much the same a elk here in the states outside of calling? I noticed you've enjoyed our hunting. Thank you for your nonresident contributions!

No issues with broadheads, they can be checked in as you would a knife.

Yes, very similar tactics. Basically spot and stalk or calling in during the rut.

Very cool. I'll have to dig into the calling and herd concentration once we get closer. My vacation project manager (girlfriend) has approved NZ for 2026. (y)

Happy hunting,

Terry

Keep in touch, happy to help if you’re doing a DIY hunt.

I’m planning to apply in CO 2025. Looking forward to getting back into the CO mountains!

Excellent. I'll PM you on on both trips once I hit the 10 message threshold.

Very cool! My wife and I will be there next March for our first time. We'll be backpacking for 3 weeks and hopefully find some stags. I can't wait to see that country for the first time. Thanks for sharing your hunts!
